No pay??

Teacher's pay is covered by STPCD (I think those are the initials!). It is also known as the burgundy book. Teachers have fought for their terms and conditions to be fair and applicable to all who are in the same profession - no differences between education authorities, for example. I suggest the OP (I think it was Kelloggs) has a look at www.tes.co.uk - go to the Pay and Conditions forum, there may be something there already to cover your query. If not, a poster called Tafkam is the best person to advise, although there are others who will also be able to help. Tafkam also has a link to his FAQs, which may be useful.0

I did not receive my P45 from my previous employer until this Saturday - but I expected to have been paid with emergency tax deducted. However, I have not received a single penny!!
Clearly this has put us in difficulty this month - and I am not happy that they have had the details well in advance of the next pay day. Can I demand that they pay me by cheque or will I have to wait for another whole month before I get any money? This will mean bank charges and unpaid bills which clearly won't go down well!!!!!
Silly question but is your current job with the same council? as my wife gets paid the last thursday of the month where she is now, and not the 25th?The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -

Sorry, I was picking up on terminology used when this was first raised, where freakingout suggested that not being paid for your first month until the end of your second month was 'a month in hand'.

Not wanting to be argumentative (just for a change!) but it's clearer if you think of it in weekly terms. If you start work on Monday and are paid that Friday, that's being paid in arrears (as opposed to being paid in advance). If you're paid the week after that first Friday, that's being paid a week in hand.
I've had a vast number of jobs over the years and I've never known anyone to be paid a month in hand, ie. to work 8 weeks before receiving any payment.0 -
I have worked for 7 weeks without pay before, because I started 1 week after payroll went in, so didn't get paid at the end of the first calendar month we hit, got almost twice as much o the second one, then got back the tax I overpaid in the third one. Having worked as a temp I expected it, and planned for it, although I think they did tell me it was going to happen.MFW #66 - £4800 target0

There is a difference between working a month in hand and being paid monthly in arrears.
Month in hand = you don't get paid after the first month's work you do, and the company hold the money 'in hand' and pay it to you when your employment is terminated. It's a fairly old-fashioned approach to encouraging employees to work to the end of their notice period without breaking the terms of their contract etc.
Monthly in arrears - you work a month, then get paid for it at the end of the period. This is common practice for virtually all private sector monthly paid jobs.
I have never heard of any company making its employees work a month in hand. A week in hand, yes, but not a month.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't mean to repeat Oldernotwiser's post - we must have both been typing at the same time!
EDIT2: Nope, just realised I didn't read to the end of the thread before replying. Sorry, wrong end of a long day!0 -
I don't suppose this will really help but when I was teaching full time I worked a month in hand. I started on the 3rd September and didn't get paid until end of October. Hopefully yours is different as I really struggled!!0

An update - it is a different council to the one before, but the payday is the same. Payroll did not have any of my details set up as they have not received them from personnel who were sent them on 22 December. Goodness knows how long it takes them to get from one department to another, but hey ho!! Upshot is that my school have sorted it, so that the council have advanced me and will recover from next month's wages when they should pay me two months' worth of money. Haven't checked if it is in yet, but I was told it will be either today or tomorrow. Nothing to do with being a month in hand, they didn't have my details to set me up.
Just to clarify - I wasn't being shirty yesterday, I merely wanted to know if I had any grounds to complain and demand payment if they did get difficult - that was all!! No point in shouting if I have no rights to do so!!! Anyhow, thanks for the advice guys - sorted now - phew!!0 -
I've come across this before, where somebody was employed starting round about Xmas it meant they'd missed the strict public sector magical cut off date - and it can be 7 weeks before you're paid if nobody can make an adjustment.0
