No pay??

I started a new job on 1 January (the contract started then). I am a teacher. On 22 December I drove to the school at the request of the head teacher, to complete all the forms so that I would get paid etc.

I did not receive my P45 from my previous employer until this Saturday - but I expected to have been paid with emergency tax deducted. However, I have not received a single penny!!

Clearly this has put us in difficulty this month - and I am not happy that they have had the details well in advance of the next pay day. Can I demand that they pay me by cheque or will I have to wait for another whole month before I get any money? This will mean bank charges and unpaid bills which clearly won't go down well!!!!!

It has always come through on that day before from other employers - that is the day it should be in my bank!

ask them what has happened then and if they don't offer a suitable arrangement (which if they have just completely messed up they probably will) ask for a loan to cover you for the month until they amend their mistake

Who-ah a second there. Have you actually discussed this wtih the payroll dept/head teacher to make them aware of the issue? I would discuss it first thing tomorrow morning if you can get in to see them/her/him - before demanding a cheque they may not be aware of the situation and once they knw about it may be able to rectify it for you by a bank transfer.

I only discovered this evening that I had not been paid, so no, I haven't had the chance to discuss it with anybody. However, having worked for them for the past 3 weeks and having been assured that the forms had gone off more than a month ago well in time for payroll, I would think it reasonable to expect to have been paid - even at emergency tax rate!!! What I want to know, is that if they say that they should have paid me but didn't set me up on the system due to delays, am I entitled to demand payment now rather than have to wait for another month with no money. I do not feel it reasonable to have to wait for 2 months before I get paid - how do they expect people to live with no money?

Yah - I understand. All we're saying is that you should chill a wee bit tonight if poss! and speak to them in the morning. I'm sure there's a silly error here somewhere. Im' sure they'll sort it all out for you tomorrow. The same thing happened to me when I started a job in December and I wasn't paid just before Xmas! panicked like you - however, I spoke to the head of department and he in turn spoke to the payrol debt and they arranged a one off emergency payment to me that reached my bank 1.5 days later. ...

I'm sure it will be fine - just try to chill a wee bit tonight - I know it's very difficult and emotions are heightened - but before you jump to the fact 'how do they expect people to live with no money' you need to speak to them with a more level head tomorrow and give them a chance to sort it.

However, if you do so tomorrw and they say they won't' pay you for 2 months (very very unlikely) then yes, you have every right to be extremely !!!!ed off!!

but I'm sure it will be fine...

I know you are stressed and anxious but just try and get a good nights sleep and speak to the payroll department in the morning.

This can only be a case of one or two things 1) an oversight or 2) their c*ck up. Give them the chance to put it right for you in the morning (either by cheque or CHAPS) and if they dont then I would either speak to the payroll manager or HR.

The should not expect you to work for 2 months without pay.
