B&Q Faulty Shower

Hi,

I'm not having a good week of it at the moment and it's only Monday!

I bought a Creda shower from B&Q last year on 16th March, I had it installed by a local electrical firm who had all the appropriate registrations for carrying out this work.

Last week the shower wouldn't heat up and I had the same firm who fitted it come back to have a look at the problem. They have advised me that the element is gone and something else is wrong as well (can't remember what now) but the cost of repair is £140 including parts and labour, which is beyond the economic value of the shower which cost £99 and the electrician has suggested replacement from him at a cost of £70 plus fitting and VAT though he is happy to order spare and repair the existing shower.

However, I have not even had this shower for a year yet, so I am not happy as you can imagine.

I don't have the reciept for the shower but I do have my credit card statement showing the purchase so I was wondering about taking the shower back but I don't know if this is going to be a possibility because

a) I don't have my purchase receipt
b) The shower has been installed

Does anyone know where I stand legally, can I get a refund or is it a case of abandon all hope and just get a new one?

You need proof of purchase, which needn't be a receipt. However, a credit card statement would normally show simply that you spent £99 at Currys, it wouldn't show what you bought, so it is not proof of purchase.

They should be able to track your transaction in backoffice if you've got the bank statement but they may get in touch with the manufacture to carry out the replacement so I would quickly first cut out the middleman and contact Creda first. Then get in touch with B&Q if you don't get anywhere with them.

When i used to work for B&Q we would request people leave faulty showers in place and contact either us or the supplier to carry put a repair/replacement.
Before any jumps down my neck I know the OP contract is with B&Q and not Creda but B&Q may well just get Creda out to do the repair as that would be them carrying out there obligation under soga to a repair.

Yes B&Q should be able to track the transaction in their backoffice system. Do you have the original card they you bought it with? Or if not the card number or the statement should be enough for them to search.
  • Did your fitters write down any of this information that you could take into B&Q? As it stands, it would be up to you to prove that there is an inherent fault with the shower because over six months have passed since purchase (the first 6 months it is up to the retailer). However, if you have something written down from your fitter this may be enough to get you a refund, repair or replacement.
  • I've got the card I paid with, it expires at the end of this month though.

I have been ringing to try to get through to B&Q where I bought the shower but no-one answers so might chance going there and seeing what they say.

Will try Creda though as well, thanks :)

Yes the fitter has written down the fault but taken it with him but he has said he will provide a proper written quotation with the problems listed tomorrow and post it to me.
  • Well I think if you have something in writing from your fitter that should be sufficient proof of the problem and B&Q should really do something.

Don't you have the guarantee registration card from Creda, and the original fitting invoice. If you contact Creda directly that should be enough to get a creda engineer out under warranty.
Warranty is nothing to do with the fitter, or B&Q at the moment, for practicality.
  • I'm about to ring Creda now and I'll update as to what they say.
  • Spoke to Creda

They will send an engineer out within 4 weeks, not ideal but better than a kick up the backside!

If there gong to take that long you might be better having a quick word with B&Q to see if they'll do anything for you, But if your not replacing it yourself it might be better to wait.
