Last May 2009 the family motor failed it's MOT, I really couldn't believe it when the tester said "sorry mate" as I make sure our Passat TDi 2005 (05) is well looked after and regulary serviced etc, it failed on a split gator, <phew> thats all.

A quick trip to my loyal and trust mechanic who has serviced the family cars since we were kids for the old man, and now he does ours and my brother and sisters cars one new gator later and I got the PASS certificate the same day.... Not too expensive either, and I am led to believe a common fault of the passat....

Off track but I have just used a firm call In-n-out for my cars MOT, they state they will do minor repairs (in my case 2 working but failing number plate bulbs) for free. Not sure how far that extends.

  • Dodgy flexis? pugs are very bad for that for some reason...

    No, pitted discs.

I guess one of the main beneifits of a newer car, and one I have been considering lately, is safety. Although I am confident I will not crash my car, there are some right idiots on the road. And 4x4 vs Peugeot 205 would be scary. There have been alot of safety developments in cars in the last 10 years - airbags, safety cells, side impact bars etc

Never paid anything - always passed first time.

The nearest I came was a duff bulb - they replaced it without charging.
  • I've had 2 (real) minis so probably about £500, I know last years was expensive and it was even worse as I knew I would be selling it shortly after :(
  • Ok confession - £700 to get an old Volvo through many moons ago - and errr spent (hides in corner) almost £1k to get my old MGB GT through years ago (it went to a posh MG garage & they hid it around the back)!!!

    Awwwww bless poor thing :o
  • About £450 plus fee for MOT and we always keep our cars until they die, so usually old ones. Our present one is nearly twelve years old and sailed through it's MOT last time (MOT station is on the coast :) )
