Iron blew up!

Decided to do a bit of ironing yesterday and when I plugged it in, it gave me an electric shock and then kind of 'blew up' it still works, but is singed and is making a funny noise, so I obviously dont want to use it.
When I looked at the receipt it was purchased on 18th Jan 2009  rang Argos and they told me to ring the manufacture, which I did. Manufacturer said they will replace it, but I have to pay for it to be sent to them.
The iron was £30 - I dont think it is worth sending it off - I dont know how much it will be to send, but I cant imagine it will be cheap - I will also have to wait for an iron and I have a huge pile of ironing!
Should Argos do something here? I am less than a week out of the 1 year guarantee:(
