...and I will climb on to said soapbox.

I think a huge factor is the amount of "stuff" available. It is human nature to want it all, but these days there is a lot more to want.

When we set up our first home in 1975 I wanted it all and all was a TV, fridge and a twin tub. There were no microwaves, dishwashers, video recorders, sky, Wii, mobile phones, broadband - hell, there was no www

So we furnished our rented flat, saved our deposit and bought in 1979 and as all these things came out, we bought them one by one - not all at once.

Another factor was that cc's were fairly new, harder to get and the limits were low and repayments were 5% min.

Don't think it was better then but it was different.

The thing is you can now buy a CD player for the same price as the rent for one month on a video recorder in 1980 (and that is not inflation adjusted).

Of course you could have wanted more, no matter what you got people always do but...

What you had.... did it suffice???

I am really in the minority...I don't watch TV, don't have a Wii, haven't had anything I don't need in ages and am happy with my life....maybe something is really seriously wrong and I am too blissfully unaware of my own misery to notice it??
OR perhaps I am just realistic about what I can and can't have and luckily have a great OH who makes me happy....maybe human nature is evolving to replace love and a partner with material things as the high divorce rates are causing us to evolve into loners, better off alone...we can even reproduce using a test tube! So it is an evolutionary issue that we are all 'want want want' and no one can take the blame! Ha! Sorted!

I know this is anecdotal and that doesn't count but......

I do sales in a huge way. I think it is a woman thing.

I am not broke but still not that very well off.

Anyways, I came across a Mulberry bag down to £675 and clicked buy.

Who the fu ck needs to spend nearly a grand on a handbag?

    Me obviously.

I was brought up on a council bliddy scheme and suddenly I need half a dozen posh bags to haul my sh it about? Come on here.....

You are right. More we see, more we think we are entitled too.
