Tax Credits when living with parents.

Hi can anyone please help? I live in a 5 bedrommed house that I rent from a housing association. My daughter her partner and there son who is only 18 month old also live in rented accomodation, however we all stuggle financially. So, today we talked about them all moving in with me as I certainly have the room, plus I work all over the country so they will get the time they need alone ;)

They currently claim Child tax credit and Working tax credits as they both work part-time. Anyway to cut to the chase what benefits will they be able to claim if they live with me, I know they cant claim housing benefit or council tax benefit as she is my daughter (not saying thats ok or fair as I dont think it is but hey ho) Will they still be entitled to tax credits or will they be penalised for that too  If I could afford to support them I would as I know how hard it is to make ends meet with a young family, sadly I dont earn enough to support another 3 people n my house :( I live from pay day to pay day

Any advice, information will be soooooo appreciated

Cheers

  • phone the tax credits and jut tell them u r making an enquiry, or go on to the tax credits website and they have a calculator, my friend done exactlythe same, her and partner and kid, moved in with their mam, and i think she still gets the tax credits, i dont think it matters if ur living with mam or not, i dnt think that affects tax credits claim. cos child tax credit is for the little one no matter were they live, its not the same as benefits rules. but i would ring and just ask for info hypotheticly, hope this helps. mind im not 100% sure, x
  • oh and if u work part time, with them moving in, your rent will go up to full rent, thats if your not already paying full rent, i dnt no if u r full or part time work. but they wont be entitled to any thing other than tax credits i think. dnt forget to inform the housing assc. x

Tax credits will still be paid without problem, the fact they live in your house does not affect their entitlement.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
