Sky problem - where is it?

Options
Can anyone advise where the problem is likely to be? Yesterday I had some problems with pictures breaking up and then the 'no signal is being received' message which sometimes happens when it rains. I checked the signal strength thing and there was nothing. When I tried today there doesn't seem to be anything from Sky at all, the tv remains snowy - no blue screen or sky message at all.

I've changed the scart, in case the sky box and tv aren't seeing each other for some reason, I've tried an old sky box, I've tried a different telly. All I can think of is the cable from the dish, or something................or maybe something else?

If anyone has any ideas that would be brilliant. I don't pay for sky any more, so can't call out anyone from there. As I don't have a roof aerial it looks as though I might have to be a telly-free zone from now on, - and the evenings are too long for that!!

Many thanks

DS

might be easier to invest a few pounds in a freesat box.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Goodness, that was quick, thank you. Wouldn't a freesat box use the same dish/cable? I'm beginning to think that's where the problem is and if so, I can't do anything about that.

its not unknown for water to enter the Sky cable and degrade the signal ( also not unknown for it to end up running into the back of the sky box) or the LNB ( the bicycle lamp bit) to fail

if the dish is reachable then both are easy to change

Either the dish has moved or the cable. If your cable goes over the roof,it may be cut & letting water in.
Unscrew the satalite cable from the back of the box (after turning it off tho!)
if the's any rust, green corrosion or the copper core is missing, the cables damaged.

Make and model of your digibox? Some, especially (but not exclusively) Grundig/Thomson, are prone to power supply unit (PSU) failure. This too can cause 'no satellite signal being received' messages, although the issue with rain suggests the problem could lie elsewhere.

Pinpointing the exact cause of the problem is a process of elimination. Good advice in respect of the dish/LNB/cable has already been posted.

    What is your location?

One is Thomson the other Amstrad. I've had both for several years. The box end of the cable looks ok and isn't damp, however I'll have a better look in the morning when I have good light in that room. Thanks for the ideas. I'll work systematically through all possibilities then, instead of panicking at the thought of being without a tv - how pathetic is that!

    Location? Peak District/North Staffs.

    Thanks

  • Is your Amstrad one of the first manufactured ie DRX100 or DRX200? If so, the zip tuner may have failed. I have already mentioned Thomson PSU problems.

If you can try them on a friend's dish.
