Thanks for all the comments folks...I really appreciate them. I'll probably phone them tonight when I get home from work - would they be able to give me a straight yes or no over the phone then? (I understand they wouldn't be able to tell me why it has been declined but rather than wait the 10 days, would they give me a straight answer over the phone?)

Never mind...just called the number, went through the various menus and it says that I basically have to wait for the letter to arrive

I'd try tomorrow between 8 and 7, perhaps try the actual account number which is 0800 9525150 and then say that you have an application query, they should be able to help.

Just an update: I haven't called the number yet to query it, nor have I had any correspondance from them either, but I've just had my credit file arrive this morning from Equifax. Everything is pretty much perfect on there (due to me never having any credit before) - the only thing it does show is the application for the Capital One Card. I'm on the electoral roll too.
The only thing I thought it could be (though I think unlikely) - my name is Samuel and it is listed as Samuel on the electoral roll, but when I applied I just put Sam. Surely this wouldn't matter...?

I've just been declined for a Capital 1 card, the first time I have been refused a cc. They state on the letter "If you want to appeal against our decision, you can do so by writing to us...providing as much information as you can to support the appeal." When I rang them they said that I should get a copy of credit agency searches as there may be something there they took into account in their decision. The only thing I can think of is that I have a number of cc's and current accounts against my name.

Does anyone know what evidence I can provide to support my appeal (or even if it's worth doing?)

Had the letter from them today - its a decline. Can't understand why though...maybe its just because I've never had one before. Time to start grovelling to the bank i suppose...

Like I said, go to your own bank first, as they will know most about your creditworthiness. You may not get the best deal around, but at least you'll be able to build up a credit record that you can then hopefully use to get the card you want. Anyway, that's the theory...

When banks consider your application, do they take into account the money you have in your account? I mean, say I had £10,000 in my bank account - would they take this into consideration when making a decision, or would it just be a standard credit check just like a credit card company?

I don't think they can have access to the details of your savings. You have to tell them - if you want to - when you appeal against being turned down or not given a high enough credit limit. I've only just learnt this myself!

  • Try barclay card...

Thats who I got my first cc through... Though its 27.9apr but I've paid in full each month and nearly have it paid off... But, tbh I would never get a cc ever again.
