It's a charge for using a overseas registered retailer.
It's specific to to debit card issuers such as NatWest / RBS.
Paypal (at least) can be sent up for payment via direct debit, bypassing the charge.I have noticed that when I use my A&L Visa Debit on Amazon they authorise a bit extra (about a £1) and it drops off 10 days later. I also had this on my Capital One Visa so I dont think its to do with what kind of card you use - is it a NatWest thing?!This is a system account and does not represent a real person. hmmm , i have a Natwest Maestro and dont have this charge , does that mean when they updat me with the visa debit i have read about , i will suddenly start paying £1.25 ?!0

As it is now September, this fee is being charged by RBS even when Paypal is directly linked to your bank account & not just a debit card. I had posted on another thread about this a number of months ago, that it is only Visa Debit cards that this happened with at the time, but as of Friday I was charged £1.25 + £0.03 for a transaction through paypal of £1.13 thus more than doubling the cost of the item
(it was for some beads)
I gave up asking either party who was charging the fee as both continue to deny it even though, as someone has pointed out on here, its in the new terms & conditions of the bank.
Wonder if it gets charged with a Mastercard debit card as issued by Clydesdale Bank & Yorkshire Bank?Don't criticise till you've walked a mile in their shoes..0 -
The £1.25 goes to Visa, but is collected by the bank for foreign trasaction charges.
I don't believe Mastercard attracts a charge, neither does Maestro. The only time is when you either are physically abroad and possibly with MC credit cards for drawing foreign currency.Best Regards

Ltsb charge it - many others will too - if you are with a bank that does not charge good for you.
No they don't.
I've used a Lloyds TSB debit card on Amazon for years and have never had this charge.0 -
I have just been charged this, with A & L (Santander), not been charged it before though, using a Visa Debit card, very frustrating as the payment was only £5.00 plus £1.25 charge.0

Does anyone know if this is still going on? I've noticed on two separate occasions that when getting a refund from Amazon, they refund an extra 1.25, even though when they took the initial payment from me it was for the normal amount (i.e., they charged £7, refunded £8.25). I googled it and managed to find this thread. Very baffled by this.
edit: Just thought I'd mentiont that I used a NatWest VISA debit card to pay0
