I am a regular user of Amazon and have never heard of this £1.25 charge.

Can you provide a link to any Terms and Conditions that indicate such a charge ?

It is not a term or condition of Amazon or Play or whoever but a term and condition of the bank issuing you with their debit card.
Ltsb charge it - many others will too - if you are with a bank that does not charge good for you.

This surfaced with the RBS Group VISA debit cards. They (the bank, not retailer) are adding the fee as an overseas transaction fee.

It is clearly listed in your account T&C, and is a fee incurred for using your card where the transaction is processed overseas. Using a credit card should avoid this. Also you can set up Pay Pal to take payments via Direct Debit instead of Debit Card. This also avoids the fee.

I never use a Debit card online anyway, as there's bu***r all protection. Better practise to use a credit card even if the fee wasn't an issue ;)

  • This has made interesting reading. Things seem a little clearer but not completely.

I've just had my bank statement through and have been hit with this charge 3 times in Jan. Twice with Amazon and once with PayPal.

It's all because my bank, NatWest, have issued me with a new card as the last one expired. This new card is a NatWest VISA DEBIT card. Not a VISA CREDIT card, which they have explained to me.

NatWest have never charged me before for using my debit card on these two sites and yet with this new card I incur a £1.25 fee each time a transaction is made.

Seems that this new Visa Debit card is creating a lot of issues as the likes of Amzon and PayPal are unsure if it's a debit or credit card and Natwest are charging their own customers for using a debit card online.

Why the sudden penalty fee. Have the rules changed on buying products over the internet with companies that are not based in the UK.

Any help to clear this up would be appreciated.
  • After emailing Paypal and Amazon they have both told me that they don't charge a fee. They've told me that it is a service charge from the bank that issued the card!!

Just got off the phone to NatWest Online Authorisation Team , who have passed my problem to the Customer Alert Team who say they will get in touch with me within 2 days with an answer to this "fee". Lets see what happens!!

Sounds's like the card is being treated as a credit card and not a debit and NatWest are slowly coming round to the fact that there is a problem and are trying to resolve it.

Don't be fobed off by customer services who seem to be under the impression it's not a bank problem, but the sellers problem. Took a while to get to the right department, but I think I may be getting somehere.

Hope this is of some help

    Sorry but you are confused.
You avoid this charge if you use a credit card.
The fee is a standard charge by your bank for using the card which they preceive as an overseas transaction.
If you do not want to pay this - use a credit card or change banks.
  • Beware if you use PayPal and have a Visa Debit Card as your draw down from bank method , you will not get charged 2 seperate fees for EACH transaction when the recipient of the Paypal payment is located overseas. 1 is the £1.25 charge and other is a 5% of transaction amount ERTF fee. So if you buy something for £5 you will pay £5 plus £1.25 Plus the ERTF . Before for the very same transactions using Solo Card as the funding source for Paypal there were NO charges . NatWest know very well what is going on and are playing dumb, or they are dumb, to try and hoodwink us all.

I would boycott Visa and NatWest and personally it is cheaper to use a pre pay card .

How much does a pre paid card cost or to top up? Seems self defeating to me?

I have noticed that when I use my A&L Visa Debit on Amazon they authorise a bit extra (about a £1) and it drops off 10 days later. I also had this on my Capital One Visa so I dont think its to do with what kind of card you use - is it a NatWest thing?!
