Welcome. You're in the right place. Trust me, I know. ;)

I've just finished off some stew with my own swede and parsnips :j - you need to be having a look here. :)
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Well done. Men like you are a treasure and I'm sure you'll get a great deal of satisfaction over increasing your culinary skills. With a little bit of cooking confidence, you'll be amazed at how much you can improvise with whatever ingredients you've got and save a lot of money into the bargain.

If you got a spare patch of ground, you'll get a lot of fun out of growing a few vegetables - try climbing beans, tomatoes and salad stuff . You can make jam and marmalade in the microwave quite easily as long as you have a really deep bowl to make it in - you don't need any expensive jam making pans. Seville oranges are around at the moment - very briefly, so if you like marmalade on your toast, give it a whirl.

And get yourself a piggy bank and put all your household savings in there. After a year you'll probably be amazed at how much you've saved.

Hi, I only stumbled across this section of the board really at new year and I just thought I should show some love.

I reckon I might be a bit of a rare breed on here as I am a 24 year old male!

I got a slowcooker for christmas, and to my girlfriends delight, she has not cooked a meal so far this year! she is nearly five months pregenant and I am quite proud that I am kind of 'in charge' of what she is feeding baby so to speak. we have had HM soup for lunch nearly everyday, and some cracking teas that i would never have made before I came on here.

I have also lost a stone in weight, In 3 weeks, just by eating properly and getting my five aday.

We also have a five year old daughter, who I feel I have got much closer to as we have both discovered a love for baking, we have made biscuits, hobnobs, loads of different bread, cakes and bran muffins and have lots more lined up.

Also we have halved our weekly shopping bill.

I have been brewing my own beer, ginger beer and turbo cider which will be ready next week.

Really looking forward to sitting down sipping my homebrew with a slice of my bread and a home pickled egg at the end of the day.

Just wanted to say thanks guys, I feel as though my life is slowly changing. The thing is to, I'm a pretty stereotypical 'lad' drink too much, swear too much, into footy, fighting films and buxom babes with staples through their stomach, My mates would laugh if they knew about my 'secret habit', but I feel like a bit of a crusader in my own little family and I LOVE IT!!!!

Next things I wanna try to get going with is jams and chutneys, pate, and growing some of my own stuff to stick in my stews etc. If anyone has any guidence on any of this, please dont hold back.

    Nice one Old Schoolers!!!!

That very impressive stuff! You're looking after yourself, your family, and your finances and I reckon that would make your mates secretly very jealous too:T:T:T:T
  • Wait till they hear you've started on the knitting/crochet and sewing

My FIL and Uncles in law are all ex navy ( and 65+ in years) and do such things. One dearly departed, Uncle Eric, was quite well known in magazines and stuff for his cross stitching he did to raise funds for the RNLI, my FIL makes rugs - and was in charge of the stores, so is fantastic at stock management. He was able to arrange fab xmas parties for free on board by careful portion control through the year.

SkintG - they are fab here, I thought I knew a lot but had forgotten loads and picked up some fab ideas. You sound a fantastic guy, love the way you and your 5yr old are enjoying baking together. Loads of good luck to you and you family for your addition in the 'baking'.;)
    Put the kettle on. ;)

    Nice one.

For a start to preserving; try this knockout recipe.

    http://www.nigella.com/recipe/recipe_detail.aspx?rid=20157

I strain it through a sieve once cooked, and put the stuff left in the sieve into a pot and keep it in the fridge; makes a wicked spread and you can use it in chillis/curries instead of chilli powder.

    Cheers guys and girls,

Some really nice things there, im filling up!

managed to fit in a loaf of bread, tuna fishcakes for tea, rock cakes, tinks hobnobs, half covered with chocolate and an onion loaf in today, as well as going to a cheeky monkeys playcentre and doing the shopping.

The bad news, the shopping was a tenner up this week!

The good news, that was because I had to pick up a pair of cheap jeans from tesco, as my others were too big!

cheers for all the links and tips!!!!
