Does that not stop genuine online play though?

Is there a way to play the backup disks without having to mess with the inside of the console ?0

From memory you need to at least softmod your Wii to allow you to play homebrew, you then get a little homebrew application that reads the disc in the wii and sends it over your home network to your computer as an ISO file that you can then burn. The only time that you then step into that grey area is when you change your softmod/install a chip in order to play the game back.0

What is the process for Soft modding, or where can I find more info ?0

Copyright law states that the owner is allowed to legally make a backup copy for their own use
Does it? The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act says:50A.` Back up copies.
— (1) It is not an infringement of copyright for a lawful user of a copy of a computer program to make any back up copy of it which it is necessary for him to have for the purposes of his lawful use.
So the question is whether or not a backup is necessary. This is covered to some extent by Sony vs. Owen, where the judge comments:While the making of a backup copy is no doubt highly
desirable, it seems arguable that it is not usually
necessary ... The fact is that if you spoil
your CD, which has a recording of music on it, you have to
go and buy another. The same is true of a CD carrying a
game. Backups are not necessary at all.
This isn't an entirely clear-cut case, as it's primarily concerned with "a device specifically designed or adapted to circumvent the form of copy-protection employed". However, there's a legal distinction between floppy disks, which are accepted as unreliable, and CDs or DVDs which are considered more robust. And, AFAIK, the legal position is that a backup is not "necessary" and therefore not legal
In reality, the chances of a knock on the door are pretty much zero and the law may well be an <stupid filter won't let me say another word for donkey> ...0 -

Ive not really kept tabs on this but as I understand it, there were already a load of modded xboxes that never worked online anyways and that report above was just microsoft removing more that theyve found (As there are quite a few different 'mod chips' in existence and also makes the report above incorrect)
So again I would ask, does updating the wii firmware to play 'copies' of games prevent online play?:idea:0 -
I dont understand why anyone would want or need a back up copy of any game?:heartpulsOnce a Flylady, always a Flylady:heartpuls0
