Strange driving habits

Out and about today, I saw some cars ahead waiting to pull out and others waiting on other side of road to turn right. As I approached (being a nice helpful driver) I considered my options

  • Stop and allow them to go
  • continue driving

Upon looking in my mirror, and seeing one car behind me and no other cars, I decided it was more efficient to keep going. What happened next? :(

The car behind stopped and allowed them to go, he was the last car in our line with no one behind him

Maybe he was not in a rush or had all day, maybe never heard of mirrors, could of course been a weekend driver.:cheesy:

Can give endless hours of thought as to why people do such things.:D
  • It always confuses me when people do this! I'm a nice courteous driver and try to let people out wherever possible (I believe in car karma!) but I never do when the road is clear behind me.

I'd do what you did, look in the mirror, see just one car behind me and think "oh, they'll have loads of chance there to all sort themselves out", so I'd continue to proceed along the road as normal.

The other, similar, odd driving that's annoying is when you're just about the only car on the road and somebody pulls out in front of you, when they could have waited as there's nothing for half a mile behind you.

Maybe the car behind was tailing you and thought he'd been "made". Are you a terrorist, member of the security services or a foreign spy?

You will never get to the front of the queue so it doesnt matter whether theres a car in front of you or not..
Nature wants the human race to survive. However, it does not depend on us because we are not its only invention.

Arriving in the UK after, after 20 years of driving in North and South America, I found this kind of thing really disconcerting when I was waiting for a clear space to pull out. Why were people doing this? Are they insurance fraudsters who will slam into me and sue me saying I pulled in front of them? Especially if they flashed their lights -- in most countries that means -- "look out, I'm coming through, don't get in my way!"

I understand what it's about now but I don't stop on a main road for anyone else except in stop and go traffic. It is not in the Highway Code and I don't think it is safe.

I totally agree. There is only one highway code and it gives guidance as to junction priorities/who gives whay to who etc etc. Letting people out should only occur when it assists the flow of traffic AND it can be done safely AND all parties are aware of what is happening. At the moment we have a system of galloping cowardice in which too many people break the rules or are intimidated by people forcing their way out/assuming that you will give way to them when it isnt correct or appropriate to do so. there is only one rule book so stick to it.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

chris evans on radio 2 last week had a 'let a person in day in' in a hope to improve the feeling of the world or something like that--maybe he is to blame.
i live in a crowded city in turkey where its norm to just pull out if the dominant' driver shows any sign of slowing-most disconcerting when your riding a motorbike!-my daily commute is like Turkish roulette!
