    Use less fuel

Duty on fuel should go up by 10p a litre and VED (car tax) scrapped for ever.

We already pay nearly the highest fuel duty in the world, and especially on Diesel, that VED should already come out of duty. Drivers already pay far too much tax as it is and you want to put it up! Scrap VED and lower fuel duty. Wheres the shortfall going to come from? Cutting government waste and all these public sector non-jobs.

You could be an advisor to Gordon Brown.
  • Number 10 petitions are designed only to make people think that they're actually helping to make a difference.

They're almost always ignored, and are therefore a waste of time.

Thats true. There will be no actual proper action from this government for the rest of their term. They are too concerned with looking after their own jobs and bankrupting the country to try and stay in power. Anything they say is irrelevant anyway as they will be out of office soon.

Are you not being a bit naive MM? Tell me what government either from the past or other countries does anything but look after themselves?

Just had an Email re the info below. Thought you all may be interested.

When VAT was temporarily reduced to 15%, the Chancellor added 2% duty to fuel to offset the reduction in tax collected from motorists. Now that VAT has been increased to 17.5% again this hidden tax has not been removed - hence recent rises in your fuel costs. Sign the petition at the link below to have this stealth tax removed!

Please pass this on and get as many of your friends to sign.

What about all those retailers who put up signs saying they were not going to impose the VAT increase when it went back up to 17.5% despite some of them not actually having knocked off the 2.5% the previous year? Are you not also outraged by that? You might as well start another petition up for that.

Correction, I want to transfer it from one form of taxation to another, which would be a much fairer use more/pay more system. No increase or decrease in the tax taken from motorists as a whole.

    +1

I've just bought a passat bluemotion.

I get 72mpg on the commute to work, and an easy 60mpg overall.

At the peak of the fuel prices, i was spending £500 a month in diesel, now with a combination of driving less and a more efficient car its down to £100 a month.

And you honestly believe that any future government will reduce fuel tax.??

I'd imagine this would put UK Haulage cimpanies completely out of business.

On a social level, I've no issue with driving being made more expensive, provided public transport becomes much more efficient and is made cheaper. The fact is public transport is just going to become more expensive too, making this whole exercise a case of taxing people for going to work.

This article is interesting for instance:

Not sure how you come to that conclusion, they would all be in exactly the same boat.
