I find Tesco expensive for meat and veg, the cooked meats on the deli counter is full of chemicals and tastes like plastic, bought from a local butcher or deli and the taste is in a different league

Tesco are an "assembly-chain" type supermarket: staff are not expected to carry out tasks that are outside their training and routine, all is set up and the customer must adapt to their way of doing business.

On the other hand Waitrose staff are trained to expect more knowledgeable and discerning customers who will ask questions and expect, at the very least, a polite answer. Shame that these basic human requirements have to come at a higher price, but there we go.
Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.
  • I have a friend who works at a Waitrose in St Albans and from his point of view, the products they sell aren't of any better quality than the other supermarkets....in his words "we're a rip off - people here can afford to spend more so they do, on stuff of no better quality"

A higher Price doesn't always mean better quality ;)

I used to work at Waitrose and have to disagree with that to a degree. There are a lot of lines which are the same in every supermarket, such as fresh (from concentrate) fruit juice - we sometimes received cases of juice for Somerfield, Sainsnbury's, Safeway and M&S. Often they are the same price, and when more expensive this you can put down to the lack of buying power compared with the big boys (despite a constant presence in the media the market share is onlyabout 5%). This lack of buying power also applies to branded lines. Other things such as ready meals, frozen desserts and deli items do tend to be superior, similar in quality to M&S. Not to mention someone has to pay for the higher staffing levels and better training.
