Query re: unlocked phones and 3 SIMS.

I am desperately trying to find a new handset since my darling children dropped by LG Renoir into a mug of milk. I am currently on 3 Mobile and have 13 months left of my contract - so can't get a decent phone from them yet.

I am looking for something that I can surf the internet on and that has a decent camera. Ideally would have loved an iphone but can't justify the cost of it.

Have been looking at HTC Heros/SE Satios and replacement Renoirs - but I am confused as to some of the Ebay listings which say that the phones are unlocked but still don't work on the 3 network.

Could someone clarify this for me please - if a 3 generation phone is unlocked (regardless of whether it was O2/Vodaphone etc originally) would a 3 network contract SIM work in it? I am not bothered if the video calling works as I never use it.

I have heard that 3 don't like people using 2G handsets with their sims as they don't have their own 2G masts so have use Orange's 2G masts which costs them money. They say they can block a handset from their network if it only ever connects via 2G. I can't see they would have a problem with a 3G handset though.
