The depo can still be affecting some women's systems two years later. If you are lucky, and have no problems, all well and good, but I know if my daughters ever came to me as adults and asked about going on it, I would tell them not to do it.

I was on it for 5 years, positives were easy to take and no periods for me, a little weight gain but not a lot but ruined my sex drive and caused vaginal dryness for me which made sex hurt....not that ex believed me.

Wouldnt go on again though due to that!

Hi OP. I was a fit strong 37 year old and decided to try Depo. The effects on my body were devastating. Check out the black box warnings on this drug from the manufacturer, and educate yourself with all the accounts on the web of people like me. My doctor believes that the gynae and breast problems I have now are solely down to the Depo. My gynae consultant told me he can't believe it is still prescribed. Please do your research is all I am saying - then at least you can make an educated decision. Just because it is great for some people does not make it great for others - oh, and I bled solidly for 7 months despite having no previous gynae problems.

I don't know you, but I wanted to post because I wish someone had cautioned me to look into it before I did it. It is the biggest regret of my life.

I had the depo injection for 9 months, so 3 shots, I spotted constantly no break, I put on a stone in 9 months, yes I overate but I can only describe the hungar as the same that I feel in early pregnancy when you eat but 30 mins later are incredibly hungry again. I decided I'd rather stick with my own 35 day cycle than spot every day. I was never very good at taking the pill everyday and it did have an effect on me emotionally, I'd say the depo had begun to affect my moods after 9 months also. Condoms are the way to go for me if I want to prevent pregnancy, they have no hormones in so I know I'm myself.

I have to agree with rosered, if I could take it back I would never have gone on depo. Some of its effects are irreversible, I was lucky I just had some minor side effects and they were bad enough.
  • I had this years ago in my late teens, I fell pregnant on it and due to the lack of periods I didnt find out until I was 3 mths gone.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge pole again
  • I was on Depo for just over a year and my only advice to anyone considering it is DON'T! I've tried many many different methods of contraception and Depo was without a shadow of doubt the worst of the lot.

OH can vouch that I was a hormonal b*tch whilst on it, up and down like the proverbial yo-yo. I put on over a stone, and like someone else's doctor, my own didn't believe I hadn't been over-eating! I swear the only reason it's effective as a contraception is that you lose your sex drive and you're spotting/bleeding constantly. Absolute nightmare. It was convenient, sure, one jab and you forget about it for 11/12 weeks. But I decided it was pointless if I wasn't 'me' anymore! I'm still feeling the after effects now (in terms of weight not shifting and hormones being all over the place) and I've not been on Depo for months. I'm just praying I don't have any lasting gynae problems thanks to Depo!

I honestly cannot understand why they still prescribe it. I've read this thread completely aghast at some of the experiences others have had with it - it's horrifying!

Well I got pregnant with my fourth child nearing the end of the depo injection. I think I conceived two weeks before the next one was due...the appointment had been made. I only realised i might be pregnant because I started craving marmite and beetroot which I normally hate. So baby number four was a rather surprising side effect of the depo. My GP was at a loss except to say I was extremely fertile!
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over and through me. When it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
