Public sector redundency?

  • Has there ever been any forced redundency in Public sector?
    QUOTE]

Yes and the next couple of years will see loads more.

My local authority has stated it needs to shed 500 jobs to balance the budget over the next few years.

How, where and who will be affected, we have no idea. But everyone is worried and I don't think anyone feels their job is safe.

Interesting stuff - I've got a team who were TUPE'd out of LA in 1996 and as such I have to apply what that LA's policy was at that time.

Be cautious if you take a job with a neighbouring LA or similar body as it could have an adverse impact if you were anticipating a largish redundancy payout. Check out the link below.

Sorry to butt in, - does this also apply vice versa? I was TUPED out of LA 3 years ago to a Housing Trust, and now face a 'botched' redundancy/restructure,- they have not offered redundancy, just a demotion on less hours. I have just been offered a job share position back in the LA, will I lose any possible redundnacy pay if I take it?[/QUOTE]

If you take a job as part of the redundancy process then you are no longer redundant (i.e. no payment), if you are taking a job in this way then you could say that you do not deem the job on lower hours and status to be suitable alternative employment. If you are being made redundant and get paid out and then you apply for and get a job separately to the whole redundnacy process then there may be a clause under which they could claw your redundancy pay back. In the NHS you have to have not got another job in the NHS within four weeks of being made redundant.

All of this should be laid out in writing. I'd ask the HR department.
