Feedback on Tiscali?

Am moving in with the girlfriend next month (eek!) so need to go about finding myself a new Broadband provider

Have been doing a fair bit of research, and at the moment Tiscali seem to be heading the list

They appear to offer a decent range of sensibly-priced packages, including calls if required. I'm keen on the "up to 8 Mbps" packages as do a fair old bit of downloading (all legal of course :p )

So I was wondering what people's experiences are of Tiscali?

Now I know that only the extremes will tend to respond to a question like that - people who've had really good or really bad experiences. But I'd be really grateful for some people in the middle too!

I'm sure they've got their faults, but really keen to see what people think

Ta!

(ooh - just noticed it's post 300 :D )

everytime ive dealt with them they've been one of the most clueless companies. Poor customer service & take forever to remove broadband services off the line.

Check adslguide.org.uk & compare them to companies like Zen & Eclipse Internet - the ratings dont lie!!

I think they are bril, been with them for years and never had a problem that couldnt be fixed by one email. I have recomemnded them to many friends who also have never had any trouble.

They really are good, but I expect that all you will get is most slating the company I am afraid.

Congrats on post 300 as well :j

  • If you ever want to leave tiscali (and trust me you will!) they will make it as difficult as possible for you & when I was with them they didn't support migrations which will increase your downtime when you leave this joke of a company.

Whenever you decide to move broadband companies try to check their own forums aswell as ADSLGuide to see how many unhappy customers they have. Last time I looked at Tiscalis forum it was full of unhappy customers.

Tiscali have also been known to throttle the bandwidth by putting far too many customers on a pipe so your speeds can be very slow to unusable.

I 've been using Tiscali for the last 2-3 years, I've had no real problems, but I don't download very much! Sometimes friends tell me they've tried to send me an email, and it gets sent back to them! Otherwise its all tickety boo!

Have been with Tiscali for 10 months.

    The good things for me:

I get the 2MB unlimited package for 12.99 a month now (they offered an upgrade to 2MB from 1MB on the site a few months ago, and then a reduction of price from 14.99 on their site recently, both of which I was able to take advantage of seamlessly, which I liked).

I love the free webspace. I can ftp up things, it's easy and I don't have ugly adverts and other rubbish. I don't use their email - i use googlemail, so can't comment on it.

Tiscali doesn't put a load of rubbish on your computer when installing it, like AOL does (I've used AOL before)

It's clean for me, basically. I've never experienced serious reductions in speed. I like the installation and troubleshooting software.

The not so good for me:

It takes a long time to get through with customer service although they have seemed polite and competent enough for me. I needed a new modem and that took ages to deal with but they did finally send out one free of charge.

I changed my bank account and Tiscali found it a problem for some reason to take money out of my new direct debit details which I'd submitted on the website so that meant more phone calls when I went into arrears because of it. That was annoying. However, they did calculate savings accurately, from taking up the 12.99 offer, taking off the exact amount worked out from the date when I'd signed up to the offer, from the arrears that had built up, which I liked + thought good customer service.

I am tempted by TalkTalk but you know, I really like Tiscali and having switched to the Post Office for line rental, it works out as 9.99+12.99=22.98 per month, which is only less than 40p more a month than TalkTalk a month, if the 29.99 set up fee is factored into the 18 month contract.

I also like it that my 12 month contract will have come to an end with Tiscali soon so I am not tied into a contract and can leave any time if it provides a poor service again or something better comes along.

That's great Elmer. Better than mine ! Maybe I will phone (I hate phoning these companies) when my contract runs out in a few months and see if they'll offer something lower.

For anyone else who wants to know how I got the 12.99 offer - it seems that occasionally Tiscali offers it for 12.99 on their website - you just have to go there when it's up and either upgrade as an existing customer or take it as a new customer.

Tried to join Tiscali but it says only 1mb is avail... Even though I have been on Bulldog 8mb (at least i was able to cancel it without too much trouble!). I've only been reconnected to BT yesterday, so could it be because it takes a while for my line to upgrade so that it can handle 8mb?

    Cheers
