BT are currently offering free line's until the end of January 2010 - saving you about £125.
You have to take BT broadband and call plan, which start from £7.99 for 3 months, and then £15.99 a month - you get Option 1 broadband and free UK weekend calls for that.
The only stipulation is you must make at least 10 chargeable or inclusive calls per month (it does include the free weekend calls), or any month you don't you'll be charged £6.80.

There's a review of BT broadband and phone here: http://www.chooseisp.co.uk/broadband-packages/bt-total-brdbd-phone.asp0 -
Currently you can get a Virgin Broadband package of 10mb for around £15 to £20 a month but the up side is you dont need a telephone line.
If you have a mobile phone for outgoing incoming calls thats a saving.
If you must have a landline go for a VOIP phone with a local geographical landline number available from a provider such as www.coms.com you can have a paygo landline or a free incoming call for ever.0 -

That does NOT include line rental, so you'd have to pay an additional £11.54 a month.
I'm looking into the same thing, got a connected line but not active (have dial tone but can't use), want o2 broadband and want their home phone too but can't wait till march!0 -
Get cable broadband and a VOIP phone the Siemens Gigaset VOIP phones are indistinguishable from normal landline cordless phones.0

Can't you also set up a wireless network and use SKYPE?0
