please help

Hi everyone,

I apologise if this is in wrong topic but not sure where it fit in. I am looking for some advice on the following problem.

I am selling a wedding dress on a local gumtree site and received a message asking if the dress was still available to which i replied

"Hi Kate,

Yes this dress is still for sale only went on the site yesterday. Would you like to come and see the dress?"

This is the reply i received:

"Hello thanks for your response, I'll be offering you 150 pounds for the
postage cost via Royal Mail International Signed for to my partner who is on
a training course in West Africa,i want to send it as surprise present...I
would have loved to handle it myself but unfortunately I'm presently in
Finland with my boss on a business trip, so I'll really appreciate your
help. Send me a PayPal request of the total cost of the item plus the
postage cost and I'll make the payment asap.

Hope to read from you soon

Regards.

God Bless you."

My questions are:
  • Do you think this is real and
  • if i was to send a paypal request is there any risks to me as they are sending me money?
Thanks

Sounds dodgy to me. Would you not rather sell locally ?
Perhaps this would be better on one of the boards related to selling ?
A board guide can advise on that!

    Hi Scotsgal,

It sounds a bit strange to me and personally I'd avoid a buyer like this. You should get better advice on the Ebay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales board so I'll move your thread over there.

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

You only need to read the first bit to realise it is a scam.

Report them to Gumtree, they are plagued by these 419 scammers and do try and act where they can.

Then either wind the buyer up a bit or just ignore them.

DO a google search for Nigerian or 419 scam it will make your hair curl.

Tell them to send you the cash first, and THEN you will send the dress!! It's a scam... usually a hijacked Paypal account.

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

    SCAM!

And one that's has been on here recently if my old brain serves me well. Run away from this deal immediately.

EDIT... seems my old brain is only dodgy on how recent it was... http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=1843721&highlight=africa+course

Did a forum search for Africa Course and one or two popped up! LOL

Do not touch with a bargepole - and obvious scam - as others have said.

If you follow this up you will be left with no dress and no money
We all evolve - get on with it
  • I got the same email, only for a PS2 I was selling on Gumtree...think the email address had something like jenfemale in it..
    ;)I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY;)

    Scam. Ignore it.
