In fairness, if an item is being returned as faulty and the supplier can't replace (I'm assuming they couldn't replace) then a partial refund can be offered taking into account the amount of wear/use the faulty item has had. While you may find a £12 refund poor, your daughter did get 4 months of wear out of a coat and hopefully the £12 will cover the cost of another in the sales to take her through the rest of the winter. In view of the fact that you couldn't prove when you got the coat I think Next have acted appropriately in your case.

yes i know and i did state that!!
i brought the coat at the end of october its now the end of jan thats 3 months of wear.
it is a school coat so is not worn at the weekends or during school holidays which brings it down to 2 months of wear.
last year i brought her one from matalan for £10 and she still wears it to play in now there are no tears, rips or holes in it.
i think i have every right to be miffed.

You didn't keep the receipt, how should they know you paid £30 just because you say? They followed the rules. Do you think you're super special and deserve a different set of rules? Yea, it stinks that the coat ripped, but it's your own responsibility to keep receipts. Next isn't losing out on you as a customer.

My parents gave us a jumper for our son. We had plenty of other jumpers in that size, so took it back. We could not find the next size up as it was old stock and the money we got off an alternative purchase was a fraction of the price on the label.

We were miffed and were in our right to be.

But we also acknowledged that the store were in their rights to do that.

Just because you acknowledge something is legal and fair, doesn't mean you can't simultaneously be unhappy as the OP is! I don't think the OP being unhappy with how things turned out means they are demanding special treatment.

For a lot of sale items Next doesn't take the original price ticket off and they've stopped red dottng clothes to acknowledge it was bought in sale over 3 years ago so there's no way to tell whether or not you paid £60 for it before Christmas or £20 afterwards

Next has its refunded policy on the back of receipts, at tills and does gift receipts so there's no excuse for people!

as i stated in post #8 "now i think about it i should consider myself lucky to have even got that without a receipt.lesson learnt today keep receipts for everything i buy from now on!"
