can i exchange item from next?

hi guys
i bought a new coat for my daughter from next in the october half term holidays.
it cost around £30 which is more that i normally spend but thought it would last!
it has a big split under one of the arms and im wondering if i would be able to exchange it.
i dont have the receipt still but i did pay on my debit card although i dont keep bank statements and feel asking the bank to send statement out would take too long she needs the coat now.
what do i need to do first?

Its often a misconception that shops have to provide a receipt or you need to show one. The only reason a receipt is needed is proof of purchase this can be a credit/debt card statement etc

Usually its easily to just show a receipt

You can just walk into a branch of your bank and they ought to give you a copy of the relevant transaction.

I would take it back and get a credit note at least, as the coat is no doubt faulty.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

How do you ascertain the coat is no doubt faulty 4 months down the line without knowing how thecoat was used/abused? Can the Bank charge...and how much?

the coat has not been used/abused as you put it it has simply been worn.
it was brought 3 months ago and i would also like to add that i got the next size up so there was plenty of room.
i would class that as faulty!!!

have been to next today with the coat.
i paid £30 for it but they could only refund me £12 as it was reduced in the sale and without a receipt i cant prove i paid £30.
i was a bit miffed and did tell them i wont be buying anything from there again!!
now i think about it i suppose i should consider myself lucky to have got even that without a receipt.
lesson learnt today keep receipts for everything i buy from now on!!

and i bet they were gutted. Or NOT!

i love it when people say rubbish like this. like it matters to the sales assistance whether or not youll be spending £30 per year in their place of work. pmpl

and i love it when people like you have to make a comment on something your not really interested in because you have nothing better to do!

  • In fairness, if an item is being returned as faulty and the supplier can't replace (I'm assuming they couldn't replace) then a partial refund can be offered taking into account the amount of wear/use the faulty item has had. While you may find a £12 refund poor, your daughter did get 4 months of wear out of a coat and hopefully the £12 will cover the cost of another in the sales to take her through the rest of the winter. In view of the fact that you couldn't prove when you got the coat I think Next have acted appropriately in your case.
