Clean pants and socks every day (sometimes even changed before bed if I feel like it!), other things close to the skin every day- couple of days depending on how clean they smell/look (I smell things in the morning cos sometimes they can see ok at night, but after sitting over bannister all night they don't smell so fresh in the morning- I put it down to sweat reacting in air ?). DH similar with under garments, similar for normal clothes and perhaps less often for work uniform (janny!). DS (aged 2 and a half) clothes are changed when they are dirty/smelly....trousers sometimes last two hours sometimes two days before getting dirty lol (I only change more than once a day if he is really grotty or got very wet in rain or something!). Pants/socks changed every day, vests, t-shirts every 1-2 days, jumpers and shirts I try to make last 2 days! Jammies definitely last at least 2 nights for DS (one for me!).

If in doubt, do the sniff test!

Obviously, 'personal' items, like knickers & socks/tights need to go after one wearing, but common sense will determine other things. If its grubby or stinky, wash it! If not, air it then wear it!

Socks and pants I only wear once (and normally go through 2 pants and 3 socks per day...stupid exercise). Shirt's I'll wear 2/3 times, with a vest underneath, which'll do 1-2 days depending on sniff test.

Jeans and heavy jumpers, however, I hardly ever wash...Dunno why, they just never seem to get that dirty...guess I'm just a minger :)
  • Undergarments clean every day. Work-shirts/blouses probably worn at least twice before laundering but they are hung up and aired before being returned to the wardrobe because I bathe and apply industrial-strength antipirspirant before dressing.

I always get changed immediately when I return from work so work-trousers and suits are hung up, aired for a couple days and clothes-brushed then worn again. Work-trousers dry-cleaned as necessary and suits about four times a year, maximum.

To protect my good-quality clothes from wear I launder inside-out with all fastenings done up and wash on the coolest temperature possible on a gentle cycle.

Casual, non-precious items for lounging about at home after work often only get laundered at the weekends, sometimes longer depending on how much other laundry I've got on the go and where I can dry it (no tumble-dryer and no outside hanging-space either).

When I was a nipper my mother used to have special, old working-at-home clothes which she wore nearly every day for yonks with a pinny or overall on top. All other clothing was considered "Sunday-Best" or "Going-Out" and were very precious. These days we all bathe much more often, change our clothes more often and get a lot less grubby than in the past, I think so I reckon we're probably a lot fresher all round

Socks, tights, pants and t-shirts every day. (Bras every three days, must admit!) Shirts, cotton blouses, polo shirts the same. Trousers or skirts every three days unless they're dry clean type ones with a matching jacket and then it's sponge, hang up, steam... until something gets marked as they end up looking weird if the bottoms get cleaned more than the jacket. Jeans four or five days. Wool jumpers get aired and put away and not washed unless stained. Synthetic jumpers and fleeces stink after two days IMHO so I try not to buy them. Jammies and nighties every couple of days.

Anything with ketchup or other food stains gets washed straight away. With swearing.

For really dirty work like the allotment or painting I keep seperate sets of working clothes and basically wear them only for that activity till utterly disgusting, then wash them. I keep old clothes for grubby or strenuous housework. I also make the kids use older, nearly outgrown or faded clothes for camping or messing around in the garden. I don't mind chucking out a worn out or old ripped t-shirt with immovable grass stains rather than attempt to wash it.

If it doesn't smell and doesn't have a stain, I'd wear it again. we have a chair to hang clothes that have been worn but aren't dirty.

My OH has one of these, it's got 75% of her wardrobe on it at all times. Kind of limits access to the computer desk :(
