Train halfway?
My daughter wants us to meet the new boyfriend, but it's too expensive for them to come back here for the weekend (London to near Warrington - silly Fri. night prices, 14th -16th July).
I've suggested that they catch a train somewhere in the middle if they can find a cheap day return somewhere, for either the Sat. or Sun. & we'll drive down to meet them & take them to lunch.
So, I wonder if anyone knows of a good deal or place that's usually cheap to get to from London, & also easily reached coming down from the M6?
Many thanks for any suggestions.

I've had a look and, although a Saver Return to Warrington is £57.20 it's possible to book in advance and get "Value Advance" singles from £12.50 each way. Or £18 gives much better choice.
For Saturday 15th they could do
10:35 - Euston to Warrington (arr 12:35) - £12.50
18:53 - Warrington to Euston (arr 22:31) - £12.50
Have a look at http://www.thetrainline.com for more options and details.
Hope the meeting goes well!Can I help?0 -
Well, Coventry is half-way and right on the M6... and there's an Ibis just on the edge of the city centre a stone's throw from the railway station.
I can recommend some good value places for lunch if you need 'em too: best to send me a PM in case I can't find the thread again!Mortgage at outset (May 2004): £80,000

Strangely London-Coventry takes just as long (or longer) than London-Warrington and looks to cost more!steve_cov wrote:Well, Coventry is half-way and right on the M6... and there's an Ibis just on the edge of the city centre a stone's throw from the railway station. Can I help?0 -

All the London-Coventry times I got for the Saturday were 2 hours plus. Change at Rugby etc. Is there engineering work going on?Can I help?0

Does the megabus go from anywhere near warrington to London cos that is really cheap specially if you book early0

Yes, that was the time I quoted in my original reply. We were wondering why I couldn't find a train from London to Coventry in under two hours. I know it should take 1:10 because I used to study therewaster wrote:Don't, it is about 2hrs if there are no delays.

Thanks for all your contributions. I've tried clicking 'Thanks' buttons but it doesn't seem to be registering!
If they're coming home for the weekend they want to come after work on Friday night, & that's when the tickets are v expensive; I've tried returns or 2 singles. And the bus/coach takes too long after a day at work!
So the alternative is a day out somewhere in between - I wondered about Coventry or Lichfield or Rugby - it's just I don't know really which towns are on what lines & which are the places that have cheap day single fares. Or if there were any offers on anywhere.
Thanks again - I'm beginning to think it'd be easier for us to go to London!0 -
Forget Coventry, there's engineering work taking place at weekends throughout the summer which means changing at Rugby and getting a bus.
Rugby, Nuneaton, Tamworth or Lichfield would all probably be better bets. Just depends which one suits your timingsDebt free since December 2015. It can be done0
