Reinstall Vista or upgrade to 7?

  • There is a free trial of Win 7 running at the moment, expiring around May. Taking just 20 mins to install. Worth a punt then you can decide?

Win 7 is fine, so is Vista on the right hardware.

Hi there, I think the release candidate starts making your machine reboot every 2 hours around the beginning of march, it totally expires at the beginning of June ;)

Win 7 is v good though, on the surface it seems a bit nippier than vista. As some say it may get bogged down a bit depending on what software is installed but if you keep your machine fairly clean you should have no worries!

I've got Windows 7 on my Samsung NC10 netbook and it's very nippy.

Those doughnuts look nicer than the Sainsburys ones I had yesterday.:rotfl::D

    thanks for all the replies.

I've done a bit more reading and I've decided I'm going to take the plunge. Has anyone seen a good deal (i.e cheap) for the W7 professional (32bit) upgrade pack. I'm not eligible for the student deals on the likes of software4students :(

    Cheers

OK...read the thread through from the beginning and you'll see that is exactly what I'm doing. Including the method needed....

    Hi all, just an update.

I went ahead and bought a copy of W7 Professional from software4students in the end. All seems OK at the moment, just reinstalling progs etc...

    Two quick questions though..

    1) During the install process, the setup created a folder called "windows.old". I thought this would only contain the old OS system (Vista) files but it has in acutal fact copied everything from my HD into it.

Can I delete this folder without causing any problems? I backed up my hard drive before the new OS install. (ideally I wanted an empty drive + W7)

    2) The first question leads me onto my second. In the past, a clean install has always wiped the drive and then installed. In the future, can I use my W7 upgrade disk to format the drive and then install the OS? As obviously Vista is no longer installed.

Other than that, the OS/laptop does seem faster. However, that is generally the case after 'formatting'.

    Thanks!
