Be thankful neither of you hit the cyclist, and try and understand his frustration at you.

Sounds more like the cyclist tried to undertake a car turning left.

The way the Op has described the incident i don't think the cyclist has tried to undertake, it sounds to me as if he was just riding along the road, ok without lights but, i think the brother should have seen him, if they were turning and only going slow he should have paid more attention, what if it had been a pedestrian, they don't have lights.
Sounds to me as if the brother thought i'm fine to turn, this guy will stop.
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,
What it may grow to in time, I know not what.

The OP says the cyclist did have lights on, but they were small.

Basically both parties were in teh wrong. The OP's brother for failing to observe other road users around him. The cyclist for overreacting to a near-miss.

I can understand the cyclist's anger, but can't condone his actions. I am, however, quite impressed that he kept up with a car for some distance after the junction - the usually outpace me by quite a margin!

No he didn't, that's why he was invisible from behind

Doesn't make any difference a competent driver should have been able to see the cyclist, he has headlights.

He was not " invisible ".

My understanding is that the driver was alongside or slightly in front of the cyclists.

Headlights wouldn't help. Cornering lights that come on with the indicator would help but very very few cars have those. (I love mine though, they let you check for pot holes before changing lane)

Fair enough, you tell people they should have seen you afterwards then.
Me, I'll use lights, just in case one of the drivers out there isn't competent.

    What a confrontational chap.

Wonder if he drives as well, or is he "just" a cyclist

No, they don't. Just because they are bigger doesn't mean they can do what they like and bully other vehicles on the road.
Read my post. I said I take that approach when cycling not that the car actually always has right of way. People make mistakes (including cyclists who all to often turn aggressive) so I give way to cars and try to suss out what they will do next the same I do to other drivers when I'm driving. Doing so has meant I've never had an incident when cycling.
  • Personally I always work on the basis of might is right. I don't get in the way of 40 ton trucks in my car and I think cyclists should be careful of car drivers. Its not much good as a cyclist claiming that you have right of way over a car when your squashed underneath it. I once saw this just after it had happened, it was a fatal accident. The sight of lycra and legs sticking out from under a car will haunt me forever. (not sure whose fault it was but I know who paid the higher price).

I'm not anti bike but some cyclists do seem to think they are invincible. I have also noticed an alarming trent for cyclist to be out after dark with no lights or reflective clothing.
I have a lot of problems with my neighbours, they hammer and bang on the walls sometimes until 2 or 3 in the morning - some nights I can hardly hear myself drilling ;)
