Toyota recalls 'up to 1.8m' carsThe popular Corolla is one of the models affected
Toyota says it is recalling up to 1.8 million cars in Europe following an accelerator problem.
The carmaker says it will recall eight models including the Yaris, the Carolla and the RAV4 sports utility vehicle.
On Thursday, Toyota announced it was recalling 1.1 million more cars in the US, a day after suspending sales of eight popular US models.
Toyota widened the recall to Europe and China after last week recalling 2.3 million US cars with faulty pedals.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8489079.stmToyota is recalling 2.3 million cars in the US to correct sticking accelerator pedals, just the latest in a string of recalls the firm has had to announce.
Company spokesman Brian Lyons said the move was due to the vehicles' pedal mechanism becoming worn and, in some cases, getting stuck.
It is not yet known if the recall will affect Toyota cars in other countries.
Back in October, Toyota recalled 4.2 million cars in the US due to pedals getting lodged under floor mats.
Rare instances
The models affected by the latest recall include the 2009-2010 RAV4, the 2009-2010 Corolla, the 2009-2010 Matrix, the 2005-2010 Avalon, the 2007-2010 Camry, the 2010 Highlander, the 2007-2010 Tundra, and the 2008-2010 Sequioia.
Toyota confirmed that accelerator pedals in the affected cars could "in rare instances, mechanically stick in a partially depressed position or return slowly to the idle position".
It said it was a separate issue to the problem of loose floor mats, and that that recall of affected vehicles is continuing.
In August of last year, Toyota recalled 690,000 cars in China due to faulty electrical window switches.
Peugeot Citroen, Europe's second-biggest carmaker, is recalling some cars made with Toyota in Europe.
"For Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s, we are going to carry out an identical campaign as Toyota," a spokesman said.
The Japanese car giant has now recalled millions of cars worldwide with faulty pedals.
Both models are made in a Czech plant, a joint venture with Toyota that assembles around 200,000 Peugeot and Citroen cars every year.
Peugeot said "under 100,000" cars will be recalled. It did not say when the recall would begin.
Both Peugeot models are made in Kolin, east of Prague, and are made for the the European market mainly, the Peugeot spokesman said.
The plant also makes the Toyota Aygo.
The Peugeot 107, Citroen C1 and the Aygo are essentially the same car with different styling and fittings.
The French carmaker has no other joint ventures with Toyota.
"We understand that the current situation is creating concerns and we deeply regret it," said Tadashi Arashima, the chief executive of Toyota Motor Europe.

According to the wall street journal radio showthis morning it was actually a fault which in a small number of cases the car does an uncommanded full throttle acceleration without touching the pedal. Scary stuff in a powerful automatic car. Theres been at least 4 fatal accidents attributed to it.0

My Mothers 1 yr old multi-mode transmission Yaris recently accelerated out of control causing an accident. I know this is a recall issue in the US. Has anyone else in the Uk had the same experience.0

It now seems that Toyota are getting set for a global recall, incl the UK.

I actually previously had a yaris and on a few occasions it unexpectedly went full throttle and it was as suggested due to the fixed manufacturer mats catching it.
I would imagine the recall is likely to be a new type of mat fitted to sort it or something to hold the mat down at that side as well...0 -

Brillant not glad to see my yaris is now on the list!:T
Am i just been silly or do people have no common sense? If the pedal gets stuck on the mat move it! My yaris is the 3rd car ive owned and ive always had this problem with the mats ive used. If you screw the mat into the holes made by toyota then yes it will get stuck under the gas pedal. With a bit of logic though you could unscrew it and move the mat up therefore eliminating the problem! In fact it was the toyota garage guys who screwed my mat in to fix in place. No one seemed to notice the gas pedal was sticking pulling up the mat. Needless to say my car never left the garage until they unscrewed it.
Get yourself a set of non-standard mats i.e not specific to your car and the ones which are quite heavy with the sort of foam based bottom. These can be pushed right up under the pedals and do not need to be fixed to prevent slipping etc.
Last tome i took my car for a recall it came back with a wonky steering wheel-no-one seemed to know whethe the seering wheel had been taken off or not- no chance they'll be getting hold of it now!

I have a 106 56 plate - does anyone know if my car will get recalled.
What does a recall entail?
Are cars replaced, refunded or fixed?
Thanks0 -
I assume you mean 107? If so yes
A recall basically means they will repair/replace the perceived weakness, They normally just do that at service intervals, although if its more dangerous they will contact you to arrange it.
Frankly I would expect next time its in for a service to be told they have fixed the recall.0
