Very Cheap Spectacles - only online

Options
Article in the Daily Express today about a company called glassesonline.

The company was set up by a student after he realised the outrageous mark up charged by high street opticians. Prices are apparently 1/3 of the price found on the High Street and the glasses are delivered by post to your door.

Website is

http://www.glassesonline.co.uk/

Furhter note:

Forgot to mention there is a freephone number as well for ordering.

I have no experience of the company or their products and have no connection with them. Would be interested to hear if anyone has bought their products and what their service is like.

Cheers

Further note:

There is a freephone number as well on the website for ordering.

  • Does anyone have a Daily Express for today so that they can double check the article? Am pretty sure the website I gave is right but I didn't have a pen with me at the time and it was a borrowed copy

    Cheers

That looks right to me. Another one to try is http://www.glassesdirect.co.uk who provide a similar service.

I have never used either but was looking into using one or the other soon.

Had a quick look at the glassesonline site.
Looks like they only do single vision lenses.
I use varifocals. (old age catching up on me :)

Actually, thinking about it, it would be far too technical to order varifocal lenses on line. Would n't it???

Also look at https://www.optical4less.com. They are made by qualified opticians in Hong Kong.

Just spent £65 on 2 pairs - one rimless with 'reactolite' and one standard. Both had anti-reflective coating, anti-scratch and the frames were VERY good quality - sprung hinges etc.

    Will be using them again

39dollarglasses.com do them and have a very detailed site which makes it very clear what measurements are required.
A poster in another thread recently reported he had received good service from them in the past but the varifocals he got from Optics4less from hongkong arrived broken as a result of being badly packed as the lens were glass rather than plastic.

I have just bought some glasses from an online company at https://www.iris-spectacles.co.uk

I was a little nervous at first having had my eyes tesed at Vision Express but all I can say is the service was excellent, their phone number was a normal landline (not an 0870!!!) and answered swiflty by a person straight away! Best of all I bought a designer frame and saved over £100 for the equivalent pair in Vision Express!!  If anyone decides to use this company to purchase glasses or lenses quote the reference 4029y3261B on the line 'Where did you hear about Iris'.  I'm sure you will be as impressed as I was! :)

you really have to be very careful about buying specs online like this cos when you go to the opticians and have eye test they then measure your eyes for the centre of the eye so they can get the exact centre of the lens.
when buying specs online they cannot do this so they may not get the exact centre of your vision.
i have astimagnatisum (sp) and that has to be measured correctly as its sommat called a cylinder in the lense that has to be in the correct position if its not then the glasses are useless.

  • The important measurement if you've got an astigmatism is the PD (Pupillary Distance) this is basically the distance from the centre of one pupil to the centre of the other.

All of the web sites I've order from allow you to specify your pupillary distance. If your prescription doesn't specify what it is you can just measure it with a ruler.

I also have an astigmatism and all the specs I've bought online have been perfect.
No reliance should be placed on the above.

Have used glassesdirect.com, received excellent service, would recommend them (no connection) but then I only wear my glasses occasionaly as I use lenses most of the time so no worries about correct fitting etc for me. Saying that, the glasses I got are so good I would not hesitate to use them for more regular wearing if I needed to.

I have used this company before as well and cannot recommend them highly enough - great quality and with the dollar being quite weak at the moment you can get some really good deals.

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
