I want to get myself a new satnav, one with europe on as well.
I have a medion gopal but i cant find any updates and i need europe now anyway.
A friend has recomended a garmin nuvi, and another friend has recomended a tomtom. Ive looked on both sites and they can be updated, so both are equal.
BUT which one is better and more reliable? ive had satnavs in the past which have drove me mad, slow voices and slow directions. The features i use now are:
2D + 3D
POI
SPEED CAMERAS
SHORTEST ROUTE, FASTEST ROUTE, ECONOMICAL ROUTE
AVOID MOTORWAYS/TOLLS
FAVORITE PLACES
MOST RECENT PLACES
So i would hopfully like to have these features on a new satnav, but when u read descriptions it dosent say. Which is why i am hoping anyone out there with one of these satnavs will tell me if it does.
thanks

Check the Garmin range for a start. They're far better than the market leader, TomTom.

There's such a range, it might also help if you let us know what sort of price you want to pay and if you have any specific requirements such as detailed continental European maps or safety cams.
  • I didnt realise there were different europe maps?? I want it so I can go euro disney later in the year.
    I will spend around £200.
  • ive just checked the garmin site and there new one looks fantastic..
    garmin nuvi 1690
Has anyone got one, is it easy to use?

Some just do UK & Eire, others will additionally have basic European maps but if you expect to use it in Europe more than once in a blue moon then you'll want the detailed European maps.

I've got an old (but pricey) TomTom and I'm not happy with it at all. Take a look at the Garmin Nuvi 765T as well, you can get it for about £150

All half-decent, branded satnavs are easy to use.

I Prefer the tomtom, it might be a good idea to try them out first, the tomtoms menu system just feels natural and logical

I can't deny that TomTom devices seem good in the showroom. In practice, their maps are atrocious compared with Navteq systems. In comparison with Garmin, their safety cams are pathetic. TomTom's warranty and support service ranges from a time consuming nuisance to an epic story of emails, faxes and phone calls; if you go with TomTom, just hope you never have to contact them for anything.
  • Done all this before, do a search.
Garmin tend to rise to the top.
Buy a Garmin and be happy.

I bought a Garmin but returned it as the traffic info was faulty.

Glad I could, as the software was archaic compared to my 4-year-old TomTom.

The volume doesn't increase/decrease with the car's speed, the voice is tinny and hard to understand, there is no option to fine-tune a route (eg by avoiding a certain road or town), the speed camera warnings are frequently at the wrong speed, causing unnecessary beeping, and the speed cam warning flash obscures the next section of road.

I would certainly agree, however, that TomTom's support is dreadful. But I will stick with them in future.
