When I went for a meal in a restaurant near Newbury a while ago, they had a wonderful dessert.
It was lemon sorbet with vodka poured over, they called it something like 'Sorbetini'. It was lovely, like eating a vodka and bitter lemon!!.
Bet you could do that with gin too, although I haven't tried it.

In France that's always called a 'Coupe Colonel', very nice too!
  • Limoncello! A definite must if we have go to an italian! YUMMY.

No way alcohol goes off - that's why it's used in preserving.

    Rumtopf anyone?
    Put the kettle on. ;)

    Hi Dandy -candy

Hope you enjoyed your gin and tonics! :j:beer:

There is another thread about alcohol and its shelflife, so I have added your thread to that one to keep all the information together

    Thanks :)

  • Alcohol doesn't go off. In fact, it kills pathogens, which is why humans developed beers and wines in the first place (besides being calorific, the alcohol in them made the drinks sterile, which was pretty handy in an age before modern hygiene).

However, if aerated, shook about and exposed to air for a very long period, alcohol can oxidise. It then becomes ethanoic acid - which is what you and I call vinegar. So long as the top's been on, though, this shouldn't be an issue.

When my grandmother moved out of her house some years ago, we found bottles of spirits and liquers in her pantry which had been there for YEARS. Some of the price labels implied that they were around 15-20 years old. The majority of them were fine, apart from the creamy ones!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!

found this tiny bottle of some sort of Polish Sherry - there's a Polish lady down the road who Mr A does jobs for and she's always bringing him gifts - but this smells like death so it's gone down the sink! Or perhaps I should save it and use it as paint stripper!
Didnt Victor Meldrew once come home with some polish sherry?:p:rotfl:
