Have to say I agree with Sunshine12; I've been to a number of places like Colleges / trainee stylists and only twice have I had a good cut; hair cuts are something I now don't skimp on. Plus I haven't really got a spare 4 hours to be sat about having it coloured when it would take an hour with my stylist. This is my one luxury! (and mineral make-up) I figured that if my haircut at £28 made me feel a million dollars, this was better than an £8 haircut that had me reaching for the scissors after the first wash.
  • I always get my hair cut at my local hairdressing college - and the cut has always been really good. There's loads of supervision and the girls are really cautious - in fact I had trouble convincing them to take more than 2 inches off. It does take longer because the teacher needs to confirm each stage, but I find the convenience of their evening opening hours outweighs the hassle of being in the chair for longer.

At my local college, the hairdressing course is 2 years and the beauty course is only 1 year and they have to learn a lot of different techniques in that time. Consequently, the hairdressers are much better than the beauty students.

I pay £5.40 for a cut and blow-dry, which takes about an hour and a half on average.
  • I don't get my hair done at a hairdressing college but I have had it done my trainees in salons. I always got it done by Toni & Guy or Headmasters trainees for about the last 2 years I got it done by my fiance's sister who has been a hairdresser for 15 years and a couple of week friends I hadn't seen for about two years said truthfully my hair looked better when it was getting done by trainees!!! Was so shocked!!!
So I'm going back to them - for my highlights and haircuts - they must be better!
I feel reassured as the top stylists in the salon oversee the trainees and each section is checked before and after the trainee has cut it and often the top stylist will much in for a bit to show them, I think sometimes you have to be prepared to maybe loose half an inch more than you asked for but I have such a long hair that doesn't matter to me, or simply asked for an inch less than you actually want and it'll probably end up right on what you wanted lol!!

I'd go for it!! They're well supervised and hyper aware of what they're doing, probably more so than a qualified hairdresser imo.

I did massage at college a few years ago and we had members of the public come into the salon, and we were always supervised during our treatments. I know a massage is a bit different, but you know what I mean lol.
  • My best 2 hairdos ever were by trainees. I paid £10 for a cut and blowdry in Toni and Guy which took about 2hrs but the cut was fantastic. The other was a FAB spiral perm - no mean feat on waist length thick hair! I can't remember what that cost, but know it was less than half what it would have been wth a qualified sylist. It took 8hrs though:eek:
  • i've never used colleges but i do ring around the local hair salons looking to see if they want models which is a really cheap cut and i pay £30 for a cut and colour or if i really wanna go all our i look on gumtree for free hair cuts and go to london to get it cut at a top salon! thats a nice day out :D

If there's one near you why not go to a vidal sassoon/toni and guy/wella training academy? The students there are all working as hairdressers in nice salons and are there to learn the latest trends or products. You get a really nice, trendy haircut and its usually less than a tenner.

At my local college I could get a cut and blow dry, luxury manicure and luxury pedicure all for the price of a cut and blow dry at a normal salon (£30). But is it worth the risk? I haven't had my hair cut in 6 months  because it grows really slowly and I'm always nervous about getting a bad cut. I've only had 2 haircuts I've ever been happy with and I always ask for the same thing... trim the ends and long layers.

The thought of going for all those lovely treatments is appealing though as I am looking rather ungroomed lately:o

    What do you think?

I think you get what you pay for with hairdressers - if you pay peanuts, you often get monkeys - I would never go to anything cheapo because it's a false economy if you then have to pay to sort it all out.

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

actually, as quite a few posters have said - you dont have to pay to get it sorted out!
havent you read all the posts?

I have had terrible haircuts by very experienced stylists - which put me off hairdressers for good! havent been in nearly five years as i cant seem to find one who can cope with my very fine hair (I had a fantastic hairdresser who retired when she had a baby before that) and unfortunately the college is not easy to get to and appointments are like rocking horse poo - or i would be giving them a try!
  • Thanks for all the replies, I think I will risk it but just get a trim and see how that goes......will let you all know!
