moneysaving beauty...worth the risk?

At my local college I could get a cut and blow dry, luxury manicure and luxury pedicure all for the price of a cut and blow dry at a normal salon (£30). But is it worth the risk? I haven't had my hair cut in 6 months  because it grows really slowly and I'm always nervous about getting a bad cut. I've only had 2 haircuts I've ever been happy with and I always ask for the same thing... trim the ends and long layers.

The thought of going for all those lovely treatments is appealing though as I am looking rather ungroomed lately:o

    Go for it!

I doubt anything could go seriously wrong with a trim and anyway, if it did then at least you'll have pretty finger and toe nails!

hun if you dont try it you will never know! what a bargain!
when I was doing courses at the local college the hairdressing and beauty unit was floor below us, so i can honestly vouch for some really really good haircuts having seen the results.
from what i can gather from student discussions in refectory, the students are not complete beginners and the tutor is always on hand to advise, or if the customer doesnt like the result it will be re-done by the tutor.
(btw, some of friends on the courses I took still have their hair done ten years later at the college - but appointments are snapped up quickly - so if there are some available I wouldnt hesitate)

i always get my hair cut and coloured at the college, not that they are normally last years students, and at my college its 2 trainees to 1 teacher, its always been a good cut, but is cheap too.

believe me after a few time going you will wonder why you ever paid full price at a salon lol
If we can put a man on the moon...how come we cant put them all there?

I've done it loads of times as my friends mum runs a college that trains hairdressers. I've honestly never had a problem as they are supervised & have to confirm with a teacher every move they make. If it ever goes wrong they usually promise to have the teacher sort it out anyway. The only downside is it often takes a lot longer than a normal hair appointment - I have been known to go for a cut and colour and come out almost 4 hours later - but my hair looked fab & I didn't pay at all so I could hardly complain!

I've always had my hair done by trainnes as the normal hairdressers messed it up. I had it highlighted on monday whole head for £26.50 and although it was boring sitting there for 3 and a half hours she done a super job. So did the trainee who cut it the week before. That's the only drawback the time factor.

    I've been Money Tipped!
Like you, my hair grows very slowly. I'd be scared to take the risk too. Why not try it forst with beauty treatments, and then book for a trim once reassured about the level of supervision etc?

If we had a beauty college near us I'd certainly frequent it!

Ive had a few trainees and cut and blows at colleges. And yes they are fab. I think you tend to get a better job because the students take their time and are really thorough. They also have a qualified hairdresser teaching them and watching over them all the time. Also they are being assessed they tend to do the best job they possibly can. HOWEVER - Be prepared to be there a long time. Usually for a cut colour and blow you can be there for 4 - 5 hours. Unfortunately with having 2 young kids i no longer have time to spare to do this anymore so am stuck with the odd quick trim at expensive hairdressers.
    Go for it!!

  • Treat yourself. I've heard of more horrors from hairdo's from experienced stylists than trainees.

I would be seriously be hesitant if I were you. I went to get a deal on a colour and cut (by a newly qualified hairdresser) in Cheynes hairdresser who have quite a good reputation. Went in looking ok feeling really excited about getting a new look and came out looking like Dudley Moore!! I cried for about 2 hours and regretted it until about 3 months later when it started to grow back. I can laugh about it now but will never ever do it on the cheap again to save a few quid. I had to go back to my old hairdresser to get him to fix it so it actually cost me more than it would have in the first place!!

  • I go on a regualr basis to get my hair cut at the college, it costs £10 for a cut and blow dry. I've recently started having it coloured there (after doing it myself for ages getting OH tod the back), a colour, cut and blow dry costs £22. So for an extra £7ish (taking into account the cost of a home hair dye) I get it coloured to now.

Although it takes a lot longer than a salon the thing I like about it is everything is checked and then checked again. Student does a consult, teacher checks it, colour goes on, teacher checks, colour ready to come off, teacher checks, colour comes off, consult for cut, teacher checks, hair cut, teacher checks, and corrections are pointed out and corrected then teacher checks again, then hair is blow dried and finished, teachers has a look and checks that I'm happy, I pay and leave a very happy girl :D
