Help! New to mobile phones: which tariff?

Help! I'm a newbie to mobile phones, but think it's time to dip my toe into the 21st century. I've bought a very basic phone (Doro 326; so basic it does nothing but make and recieve phone calls, doesn't even have a text facility).
I've had a look online at the various pay as you go tariffs but am totally confused by the add-ons, bolt-ons, and free minutes &c. All I want to do is to make one or two calls a week, always on weekday evenings only, as I've access to a landline in the day and at the weekend.
Taking O2 as an example, Favourite place looks promising, as it seems to allow free calls from a nominated post code, and their calls seem to be 25p a minute for the first 3 minutes and 5p thereafter. Or there's Orange's Racoon, costing 15p a minute.
But I don't understand the difference between topping up £10 a month, then getting free calls. Also, because I have no text facility, I don't know if, for example, I'll be able to get Favourite Place or Racoon, as the O2 website says I have to text my postcode to them.
Can anyone offer any advice, or is there a one-stop website which explains it all?

Ditch you phone. You need one which can text. Get a simple Nokia or Samsung.

I have this one and it is a superb basic phone with long lasting battery.
Then go on any network. I also like the Asda one. You could look at http://giffgaff.com/ which piggy backs on o2 http://giffgaff.com/index/pricing
Ditch your phone thing, ditch Orange and use Asda. Easy to understand and the store is around the corner. Piggy backs on the Vodafone network.0
