Hi there
Normally 6 years, but many have still been successful in reclaiming as from the 1990's.
If you make them aware as well that you have only recently learnt of the mis selling that helps.
One of mine was successful through the FOS, Lloyds TSB Credit Card PPI, which was taken out in 2001.
It does help if you still have the account numbers for each loan or credit card etc if you want to make a reclaim.
For more on reclaiming with guidelines and templates, useful info here:

I have just had a reply back from the Ombudsman informing me that they cannot (will not) help in a claim I brought to there attention. Reason: sold to me before 14 Jan 2005 based on information given? though information cleary stated that the policiy was mis-sold to me in 1997.0

If you bought the PPi in 2007, then the FOS have made an error and you should point out their error. If it was bought prior to Jan 2005 then the FOS are correct. It is pre-regulation and outside of their remit.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
If it was sold in 1997 that is before 2005? So if it was for something like First PLus or cars or something like that, it woulnd't have been regulated and they can't do anything.
Who was it with?Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi0 -
If you did indeed buy the PPi in 1997, then the FOS have made an error and you should point out their error. If it was bought prior to Jan 2005 then the FOS are correct. It is pre-regulation and outside of their remit.
SHURELY SHOME MISHTAKE?:D0 -
I thought the OP was meaning 2007 rather than 1997 and it was just a typo. After all, 1997 is before 2005 and the OP was inferring it was after 2005.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). I understand the dates I typed, but some time back I read on here thet pre 2005 you were less likely to get anywhere, but if it stated on your agreement reference to 1974 consumer credit act it shows the company was still bound by certain rules and worth persueing?
I know it's a long time ago but yes it was mis sold and until all the PPI scandal I didn't know I could raise a case. The agreement only paid off/terminated in 2008.
Thanks for all the comments, I just need to know if I am wasting time and effort?0 -
also my inference was without background information to viewers of this post sorry, ombudsman had already sent me forms to and fro to fill in and add to even though from the outset the dates were clear as I had provided copies of original paperwork0
