I have had one of the 870s for a while now, mostly used to backup my SKY+ to DVD after taking out the adverts and other crap at the start of the programme.

Assuming the later Sonys are upgrades and not a step backwards I would definately recommend them. Looking on the Sony site and comparing them, to the 890/870, the only thing missing from the newer ones (RDR-DCxxx) is the 'manual recording mode' but they still have a 'one touch timer' so not sure how much of a loss it is.

To misquote Brian Potter " Blu Ray, that's right Max. Blu Ray - it's the future, I've seen it."

Don't get stuck with an obsolete format!

Personally, I'm still not convinced Blu Ray is so important right now, nice to have but wouldn't spend an extra £200 on it.

Prices for Blu Ray will fall, don't know how soon though, bit like DVD players, but if you are making a lifetime purchase and don't at least consider bluray (which is the only HD format) you'll regret it.

Maybe not today. Maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

i agree have blu ray in the ps3 and the price of discs is still sky high just compare dvd film against the cost off a blu ray film.
also the price of a blank dvd is about 13p where as blu ray last time i looked was about £7-12 starts getting very expensive!

the other thing to consider is how long did it take for dvd prices to drop, when from where it was released?
the thing is you could have a machine 3-5 years down the line you may want to use and discs still not cheap enough bear in mind unless you getting an extremely high data transmitted programmes and theres not enough of that around i had skyhd and to be honest the differance wasnt worth it so i dumped the hd bit. also prices will not drop till the masses buy it and in volume.
i had a neighbour didnt dump his vhs until 2 years ago and was agrevved he had to do that as he had hundreds of videos.

I think in the fairly near future there will be another 'next big thing' that will replace DVD-HD and BLU-RAY. It will probably be more of a storage media along the lines of memory sticks.

But back OT, buy the Sony.

I'm pretty sure those Sony RDR models have been discontinued (8970, 995, 1095), the 1095 was very overpriced for the extra capacity, but very well received.
  • Looking at the model at Argos / Laskys, I can't see if this will take input from my DV camcorder and let me do stuff with JPEGS etc.
