Benefits of owning a cat

Generally, it seems, people prefer dogs. However, I feel that cats are fantastic and therefore thought I'd start a thread detailing why they make such worthy pets.
There's the usual stuff; companionship, affection, love etc, but those are things you can get from dogs too. So if you're a cat lover, what do you think makes them better than dogs?
For example, there'll never again be a time when I'm running short on dead mice (food cupboard staple).
I needn't worry about being unprepared for tinnitus as the constant collar bell ringing has given me a great insight into what the future holds when my hearing starts packing up.
The experience of watching a horror film late at night is made much more authentic when the wind blows the letter box open and all cats look towards the door with wide eyes convincing me that the horror from the TV is now in fact in my home.
Cats are better than dogs!!

Never argue with an idiot; they'll bring you down to their level and then beat you with experience.

"Britons Prefer Cats to Dogs [2002]
Man's best friend is now his cat, research has suggested - with Britons now owning more cats as pets than dogs. About 7.5m cats are kept in households throughout the UK, compared with 6.1m dogs, according to the charity Cats Protection League. This compares with 4.9m feline households in 1979. In a survey by the charity, nearly 40% of people named cats as their favourite pet - with just 7% preferring dogs. The charity said that as lifestyles change, becoming increasingly urban and busy, so do people's ideas of a perfect pet.
The research said 57% of people liked cats because they were affectionate, 49% liked them for their independence and 46% preferred them because they were clean. Nearly a quarter of people kept a cat because they were low maintenance, and 27% said they liked not having to exercise them.
Cats were most popular with the 35-44 age group - with nearly a third of all people in this group owning one, while dogs were preferred by older people"

Yay! That's fabulous news; I had no idea! Great stuff

I love my cat's total selfishness....she never, ever considers anyone else and whether they actually like her sharpening her claws on their jeans, whether they'd prefer to wait til the commercial break to let her out, if they find the sight of her, leg-in-air, cleaning her important little places whilst they're eating dinner. She lives here only because it's comfortable and convenient and runs towards me when I come home because she hopes I'll feed her: I know she doesn't care about me, but somehow that's OK and I love her anyway.:o
It's strange that I find it appealing in the cat yet can't bear selfish demanding humans:rotfl:0 -
Well my cats must be 'abnormal' then. They run towards me when i come in the door, not becasue they're hungry but because they're genuinely happy to see me. I hope! haha
I think we love cats so much because they remind us of human babies. They're demanding, selfish, noisey, they eat, sleep, poo and then keep us awake at night! But just one little look of those big golden eyes and my heart melts! My kittens love to carried about like and cradled like babies and I wouldnt have it any other wayWhat matters most is how well you walk through the fire0 -
As a dog lover I always think people don't own cats they own people.0

My cats always greet me at the door.
1 of them is a user, she only comes near me when she wants the food bowl topped up and when I don't do it, she jumps up near me, and glares at me. She's scary!!
The other one is pretty much a dog! No joke. He nicks food, he plays fetch, wants attention ALLLLL the time, his meow chirrps and brrps are about as loud as a bark, he's daft and attacks his tail.....
He needs an asbo

My cats free feed, so when they greet me it is because they want to and not for food.
People say that dogs are people animals and cats are places animals, well then my cats favourite place just happens to be my chest!
I have a dog and lots of cats and I can honestly say the 1 dog is more trouble than all my cats put together. I love my dog, but have to say I am a cat person, although my dog does think she is a cat - she cleans her paws and face and has been known to let a kitten suckle off her - even though she has never had pups!0 -
You dont have to go out and walk your cat in all weathers.
Your cats piddle does not burn big rings on the good lawn!
There is room for both of you on the sofa.

They have buckets more (bad) attitude than dogs. Dogs love you unconditionally, you feel like you've really earned it with cats :rotfl:
Dogs don't purr
