Grass isn't growing much at the moment with no rain, so if you can wait a few more weeks, Argos will be reducing loads of mowers because they don't list them in the Autumn/Winter catalogue. I bought a really good Qualcast last year about August time for around £50 and it was in the previous years catalogue at £139.99. and last years at £79.99.

  • My hubbie swears by petrol mowers - no cable to run over, no electric motor to burn out and apparently they last years.

Look out for the Qualcast Power-Trak 4000. Already reduced by £30 and almost guaranteed to go down further. It's designed for larger lawns than yours and so should last years. It's the replacement model for the one I bought. I had a petrol one before this one, kept it for 2 years and went back to electric. Too much hassle with buying petrol and not always starting easily, can't tip it over for cleaning or the petrol runs out, and if for any reason the female of the house has to use it she'd need a good right arm to pull the starting rope. Oh, and they need servicing every year or two.

    "Blurb" states that:
The latest mowers have some real innovations - there are mowers with steering wheels, mowers that pack away for compact storage and some that cut right to the edge of the lawn.

If you have a small to medium-sized garden, your best bet is a standard electric mower. For gardens less than 60m2, go for a model that's 30 to 35cm wide. For medium-sized lawns (up to 200m2, say) pick one that's 35 to 40cm. The main alternative to a standard electric mower is a hover. Generally, we recommend against this because hovers tend to be slow and untidy - and they struggle with long grass.

For larger lawns, a 40 to 46cm petrol mower is a better option. Petrol mowers are more difficult to manoeuvre in small spaces. But you're not restricted by a power cord so you can wander freely.

Prices for petrol models have dropped recently, thanks to the influence of big DIY stores. In fact, you can now pick up a petrol mower for the same price as a large electric mower - even propelled mowers, which you don't have to push, are available for less than £200.

    Hope that helps.

Ha Ha - The mower serviced every 2 years and the female rather more often but how often depends on how often she's had to cut the grass.

I've got a similar sized garden and I got a flymo power compact 400 off ebay about 14 months ago from this seller, about £50 cheaper than shop price, great! Got this one because i find it easier with wheels, its quite compact and 40cm cutting.

You wouldn't believe what great strength of character is required to go through the process of purchasing a manual push mower. Even after telling one shop assistant that I wanted a cylinder mower that you push, I was asked "would I like petrol or electric?"! After an Internet supplier and a nearby stockist let me down, I finally found a supplier and I drove 30 miles to get it. The wife suggested I wait until the shop cleared before going up to the counter to ask for it. The dusty display model by the warehouse door didn't look much like its picture on Husqvarna's website, but I realised this was only because the orange colour of its paintwork had faded to an unfamiliar light beige in the years it had sat there.

I didn't expect to use it when I got home as the weather forecast for the whole following week was for rain. However I assembled it while the ENTIRE family took the !!!!!!. What was I thinking? - this was the 21st century and nobody used such primitive garden appliances any more. Had I got environmentally friendly to the point of insanity, attempting to save miniscule amounts of electricity? Was it an attempt to invoke fond memories from a forgotton chidhood in Scotland?

Well...? - it is SO easy to use. Within minutes my wife was eating her hat and asking to have a go. "But why does anyone buy anything else?" she exclaimed.

Anyway, now that I finally have one I wouldn't have anything else. It is easier to push than both the Black & Decker electrics that we had and the Flymo the mother-in-law has. I don't have to untangle the power cable and plug it in before using it. It cuts effortlessly, even when the grass is long and wet. The grass collection box works a treat and it gives a nice finish. It doesn't consume any electricity or petrol. Nobody will steal it out of the shed. It's quiet and pleasant to use, why indeed, does anyone buy these stupid hover mowers?
