Or the ones who want to put the trolley right next ( in everyone's way) to the belt:mad:

They're the ones I have the most issue with...especially given that at almost every airport I've ever been to there is a clear marking on the floor - dots, a line, something...and if everyone stood back behind that line, at least 3x as many people could see and have direct access to the carousel with plenty of room to grab their bag when it comes around. I tend to make this comment (quite loudly) every time I find myself in the situation. So far it's not done any good. :)

The official line is that, because of the increase in the number of obese passengers, airlines have to rethink how to improve their evacuation policy and practises for the benefit of all passengers.
That makes perfect sense to me and I'm sure it does to all of us!

Unfortunately, airlines don't know the size of their passengers until they turn up for the flight. So what should they do...?

It's long been more than acceptable to state your height prior to arrival at the airport in the hope that you may be allocated a seat with extra legroom, but we all know the limitations of this.
Would we all find it acceptable to be asked for our height and weight before check-in, or even when we buy the tickets?

There must be a practical solution somewhere, but personally, I hope the safety of all passengers wins out.

Tall people can't adjust their height, whereas obese people can lose weight.

I totally support asking people who take up more than one seat to pay for a second.

I so wish you thyroid goes wrong and you pile on weight and then YOUR attitude and rudeness will change.

Whats next - mentally ill, smelly people, - we all have to put up with things in life that we do not like - if you don't want to sit next to an overweight person - DON'T FLY!

So we should all not go on holiday by plane just because we might get to sit next to someone who encroaches in our paid for space? So we can only go on holiday by driving or by ship?
    Ridiculous.

I do have sympathy for people with health problems but have always had issue with 'wide' people sitting in the seat next to me be that by train, coach or plane. What is worst is when 2 or three are travelling together and sit in different rows so they dont crush each other.

If this is correct and, personally, I haven't experienced it, isn't this an admission that those overweight people acknowledge travelling next to someone with a similar build as themselves is not a pleasant experience?

I so wish you thyroid goes wrong and you pile on weight and then YOUR attitude and rudeness will change.

You are actively wishing a medical disease on someone, and you are saying that I've got an attitude ?

I was merely stating biological fact, and in no way was being rude or insensitive. If you disagree then please counter-argue the biological rationale of what I have said.

As stated previously, people don't "pile on weight" because their thyroid "goes wrong", they failed to adjust diet when suffering from a medical condition. Having a disease isn't a choice, whereas failing to deal with it is!

Genuinely mentally ill are not permitted to travel without appropriate care. Airlines frequently deny travel to individuals who smell particularly badly, or are not wearing appropriate clothing - those already happen.

If I choose to fly then I don't see why my personal space should be reduced by someone who chooses to maintain an obese frame.

Remember, being obese is a choice.

Oh come on! It was not like I'm making voodoo dolls or hoping that ANYONE gets ill - It was making a point.

There are doctors that would disagree with you about choice (and legal courts). In some places obesity is considered a disability and under those rules your comments could cause offence and to say the least, not PC!

Mentally Ill and smelly etc, Yes I agree with your comment - BUT they are not charged more are they?

In the news here a few months ago an American owned airline lost a lawsuit for charging an overweight passenger for a second seat, his argument was that he was travelling with his child that was (I think) 4/5 years old and their combined weight was less than the "accepted" weight of 2 "regular" passengers therefore with regard to weight he already bought enough seating to "cover" his weight and his childs.

Not knowing you, I can only assume that you are self centered, and it does not matter to you about the other person - as none of us are perfect, I wonder if you have something that you do by choice that may be annoying or offensive to your fellow passengers in a close environment.

I could just imagine sitting beside someone for 9/10 hours who drinks too much, contantly sniffs/grunts, picks their nose, scratches their behind, etc etc.

As you say it is a choice and if you do not like it you have the CHOICE to NOT fly or upgrade yourself to avoid it.

If us skinny's , sat next to 'fattys' who stayed on their seats and did not try to pinch part of our seats, which WE have paid for... no problem.

How can anyone defend the practice of stealing the space I have paid ( hired ?) for.
