  • And quite rightly so. There is nothing worse than being squashed into your seat because the fat person hangs over half your seat as well !

  • & it will happen more and more, as the airlines squeeze increasing numbers of smaller seats, with diminishing legroom onto their planes.

Even 'normal' sized people will fing a long distant flight less that luxurious when the seat width is 17" and the seat pitch is 30"

Of course a cynical person would suggest that it is a lot to do with marketing and getting them to 'upgrade' to Premium Economy.

Tall people can't adjust their height, whereas obese people can lose weight.

I totally support asking people who take up more than one seat to pay for a second.

  • It sometimes crosses my mind that airlines should add passenger luggage to the passenger's weight. Why should someone who is 20 stone to start with have the same 20kg luggage allowance. Or maybe give everyone a set allowance to make up in bodyweight and luggage total (just a madcap thought really).

Yes there is, when you are in the middle of two fat people!

This has been mooted time and time again. It will never happen. Pax will say it is infringing their civil liberties to have someone knowing their weight. Some U.S. carriers do weigh person and bag though, usually when flying in a small aircraft for weight distribution purposes.
Trust the French, straight to the point as usual, first the burka now this, you gotta love them really.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.

How obese is obese ? I know that this is an old article, but is indicates that there will be 13 million obese people in Britain by 2010 (is that about 20% of the population ?).
I am really dead chuffed to say that I'm no longer obese, but at 6ft 3 in tall, how comfy would the person be who was next to me on a flight ?

What a cracking idea - does that mean that my 3 year old daughter can have an additional 12 stones worth of luggage ? She is , after all paying full price for her seat :D. Or is that different ?

On many airlines the under 5s can travel at 10% of ticket price, but without any luggage entitlement - which would you prefer ;)

Excellent point, and a very tricky one. I'm 6foot4 myself, and the correct weight for my weight which results in a 36inch waist. I'm guessing you could be medically obese at 5foot1 with a 36inch waist, essentially taking up the same 'space' as me on a plane.

I imagine they'll have a airline seat at checkin (similar to the overhead baggage sizing tool), where everyone has to demonstrate they fit into without bending the armrests before being allowed on board!

interesting spin on the same story here....

FRANCE REDEEMS ITSELF WITH AIRPLANE FATSO PLAN
    21-01-10

HUNDREDS of years of British animosity toward the French were written off last night after Air France said it would make fatty buy two seats.

The airline announced the policy change after its pilots demanded a 45% salary increase for having to shift the throttle slightly further in order to get rotund passengers off the ground.
