Presumably you've got an up to date official Calibration Certification to prove that your scales are accurate prior to accusing Tesco of theft?

12 grams out of 420 is just under 3%. I'm not sure what the law states about error margins with packaged food, but I suspect that there's averages involved. The packaging plants will probably have to have regular calibration on their equipment as part of their procedures anyway.

have you weighed out how many beans make 12grams?

As I said above re the scales - not yet, but I didn't actually accuse Tesco of the theft! They are Tesco beans and I wondered who had stolen them.;) If the party responsible (including the M.A.F.I.A) returns them I'd be most grateful.:D

Some one in good old USA did this with tomato sauce, sued Heinz (I think) and won millions!

Just after the weight is usually a large looking e. This means that the weight may vary from that stated but following what is called Normal distribution. This is a complex mathematical formula that takes the weight as the mid point but allows for a fairly large spread over a large number of cans. Most should be 1% either way from the midpoint but it can stretch a long distance.

As for who stole your beans, I blame the checkout staff. Everything is always their fault. :T:T:T

    Here's the science bit.

Tesco beans are scooped into the can by spoon handed monkeys bred especially for the tasks.

Now we all know monkeys can't be trusted, hence we remonstrate with children by calling them 'cheeky monkeys'.

A side effect of breeding these monkey with spoon hands is that they are instantly addicted to tomato sauce. They have licked their spoon hands clean and there is your missing grammes.

No point taking this to Tesco they'll just deny it.

    It's true though
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical

Can I say something that will stop, once and for all time, this silly dieting fad. The best, most efficient and simplest way to loose weight is to eat less. What's so difficult to understand in that?

    It's not just Tesco's OP.

I always weigh out my portions and all brands I've weighed come up light. I've yet to find a can where the allowed margin for error is in my favour.

Actually, that is incorrect: you need to eat the right things and you need to exercise.
Whilst it is true that you should not eat to excess, simply eating less but still eating the wrong things will make you more lethargic, which then makes you less inclined to exercise, which won't help you long-term.
