My son has shown an interest in accountancy, what A Level qualifications, or any other qualifications did you need to get into university or onto the course??

    Regards
  • I'm studying towards BA Accounting & Management at the moment, consider doing ACCA or CIMA after that as I should get quite a few exemptions. I'm just really keen on a Bachelor's because I always wanted to do Master's

i wouldn't bother with a levels or uni (unless he really wants to) i started my AAT straight after gcse's and have sat my last acca exams (fingers crossed i pass!!) however i do feel i've missed out on the social aspects of uni when i see what my friends get up to but on the other hand i don't have student loans to pay back and have managed to buy my own house.
  • Same as yorkshire laura, I'm waiting the results of my final two ACCA exams on the 22nd Feb.

Can I recommend that those of you that are still studying, check out www.opentuition.com. It's a tuition provider that also gives free online access to alot, if not all, of their study material. For example they provide lecture notes for ACCA and also podcasts of their lectures. I have been using them for a year and the website was invaluable, particularly as I did not attend any courses.

  • I am a from Spain and at the moment I am studiyng ACCA, for me the best book are ACCA
I buy my books in amazon because are cheaper, you just need to look that they are for 2010 exam (you can see this at the cover of the book)
I dont go to college because I dont have money,
At the moment is ok for me to study at home without the help of the tutor.
the opentutition is very good, the give very good explanation and examples,
thank you to them I get a very good mark in f6 (for me the most dificult part is have to explain things in english because is not my first languaje)

Hi Parker, the required grade varies greatly from university to university. Search here http://www.ucas.com/students/coursesearch/coursesearch2010/ For example, the two local to me, queen's university and university of ulster, I needed AAB to get
into queen's, but if I remember correctly, it was BCC, or possibly just CC for Uni of Ulster. As for required subjects, I don't think any particular A Levels are necessary, but Business Studies/Economics/Maths may benefit him when it comes to actually doing the course.

Does it matter to buy books issued in 2008/2009 to prepare for 2010 exams? Seems buying older versions of books are a lot cheaper than buying current ones from BPP.

Will the syllabus change each year? Do you all buy new books or older issues? I am self-funding so want to save a bit, but I am worried wasting time studying the wrong book:(
Personally (mightn't apply for you), on my uni course, I found it best to get up to date books for anything that entailed accounting regulations (primarily financial accounting) or law (company law in my case), but for other topics like finance, economics, or management accounting, going back an edition or two didn't hurt.

In fact, for this year's international financial management module, the recommended text was £45 and pretty poor, but I found a second hand book, written by our lecturer in 2001 for £6 on ebay, which I found easier to use.

Maths and economics are pretty good - possibly something like physics or law

Some universities can be funny about A Level Accounting as they don't think it is academic enough

You don't have to do accounting at uni to become an accountant - firms also take on people from other degree disciplines

Their is also the non-uni AAT route as Laura has mentioned

i spoke to an acca accountant today and he gave me some really good advice, he said to do the f3 before the f2 because it what you learn in 3 helps 2. kaplan said the same thing too. he also said that having up to date text is important though he was happy to lend me his text books from when he did his. So, did the deed and ordered both f2 and f3 from kaplan and cant wait for them to arrive to get f2 and f3 out of the way and move onto f4 ready for nov exams.:j

its an expensive route but i think it'll be all worth it in the end.
