To all those going bankrupt this month - your lives are about to improve. Don't be worried about the day at court, the staff deal with people in your situation on a daily basis, and will not be unkind. It will be over and done with in a matter of hours, and the following day will be the first day of your new debt free life - keep this thought in your heads.

  • Hi Appointment on Thurs 11th Feb.
  • good luck to you all... hope to be joining you soon (sadly not feb tho)! :)
  • Hi,

    Feb 10th for me!

Will be so relieved to have it over and done with and get rid of those calls, even my son is saying oh it's another one of those calls mum! Am feeling a bit stressed at the moment, after going through the initial panic, decision making, saving the fees and then feeling calm, I now feel all over the place again and nervous re. Weds. I put off doing the forms until yesterday (I don't know something to do with not having the time and/or inclination to do it - it then took me four hours to find and compile information and I've still got a bit more to do....don't know what's wrong with me!). Did other people feel the same?

Can I ask, what do I need to expect in court and how bad is it? Anyone else been to Brighton recently?

I've dipped in and out of this forum over the last few months and have felt it to be so useful and supportive. I'm sure I will be on here for months to come through this unnerving journey!

    Thanks!

LPNA - best of luck for Wednesday, but you'll be fine. As for what happens in your local County Court, I don't know, but it can't possible be more complex than what happens at the High Court (have a search of my threads for my long-winded description of what happened to me on the day).

A couple of tips from me:

    1. If you filled your form in online and printed it, bear in mind it deletes the card type in the Credit/Debit card section, so you'll have to write them in again. Either do this before, or take the cards with you so you know what to fill in.

    2. If you are applying for court fee exemption, and your pay history is not straight forward (i.e. you don't have pay slips as you've just started working, or just changed hours), then take any info you have and a copy of your working out. I had a printed spreadsheet with my scribbles on, and they took a copy of that to put in the file. If you are not sure that you will get court fee exemption, then make sure you take enough cash to cover it.

    3. If, like me, you read some old info re the bankruptcy fee, remember that it is £360, and not £345 (that's the old figure). Court fees are £150 (plus another £12 for those who have to go to the High Court).

    4. It may sound really, really obvious, but I can understand that your head is all over the place at the moment, so I'll say it anyway - make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get there...then add some more contingency. Although it is quite a painless process, you really don't need the extra stress of running late.

    5. Not sure how it works with a county court (i.e. whether you get the stamped BR Order the same day or not), but when you do get it make some photocopies as soon as possible. Then, if any bailiff comes to your door, you can give them a copy (just of the stamped BR Order, not the whole document).

As to how long it took to fill in the forms, I was just like you. I seemed to spend forever reading about it, and then had to finally get on and do it.

The court stuff is really just checking that you haven't missed out filling anything in on the form. You will have an interview at some point later with the OR. Mine is Thursday, and although I absolutely know I've given all the information they've asked for (and more), and I have doing nothing wrong except for running up the debt in a bid to keep a business afloat, I feel sick thinking about it :(

Did other people feel the same? In a word, YES, try and stay calm and you will get through it!

Can I ask, what do I need to expect in court and how bad is it? Anyone else been to Brighton recently? Don`t worry usually everyone is really nice, non judgemental and helpful.

Hi and welcome, hope the above helps, ask as many questions as you need, there will always be someone around who can help you, good luck for Wednesday.

My father is going bankrupt on 17th February - appointments are now not needed. When I went bankrupt at the same court we had to make an appointment. My sister and I are going with him.

His forms are nearly done - the only draw back is that when I went to add some more info to his online forms today (I am filling them in on his behalf) I couldn't log in due to being inactive for 90 days. I have emailed the insolvency service and awaiting a reply.
  • Thanks for this, will let you know how I get on - good luck Onward on Thursday.
