Souns like you had the night from hell, but in a way your brain working overtime and came to a lot of good decisions.

Def agree - (apologies if I sound like I'm mothering you, or being bossy boots, )
    keep the new loan
dump the virgin cardgd cancelled the ins
agree looking at cancelling the reward part of the account, still be same o/d charges - I've got the standard Halifax account and have a od facility, 1,500 so get charged £1 per day - keep the o/d option only incase of emergency

Just another thought re your phone, you say your on flex account, is that a contract with a phone, if your out of contract, may be worth considering the sim only card - about half the cost and your get as much of not more benefit, if you go through Quidco - you get cash back.

Re the £200 per month - don't take that out as cash in one go, - consider opening a 2nd current account, and out the £200 into there, then to get the money you have to go to a cash machine / make a debit purchase etc... otherwise £200 in hand could get blown in one go.

Re the job - now this is just my thoughts - ok the new job may seem to be better, but as the old saying goes the grass isn't greener on the other side - also what happens if you take the new job, 6 months donwn the line your probnabtion period ended / theirs redundancies etc, you may wel be one of the 1st things to go...... also you would nnedot check your ins as there may be a clause about being in employment / change of job etc.

If you were made redundant etc then yes def apply for the new job, you've been with your employer for a while, maybe use it as an incentive to get debt free, the quicker you can get debt free then you can look for another job.

As for holidays I say yes, maybe an odd thing to say, but I think that you need a reward for paying the debts, otherwise all pay no pleasure just makes u more likely to spend on the credit card as a pick me up. I know myself that the holidays to me are the things that make me stay on the debt free route, I'm a single mum, with a 7 yr old daughter, its not her fault I got into debt, so I do as much as I can to make sure she doesn''t suffer...... I'm guessing you don't have children, but just a glimpse into the future xx

Thanks for the advice and don't worry its not mothering me... I just need a kick up the !!!!!!!!

What you say makes perfect sense... I am just worried though about being stuck with 300.00 per month to try and save some of it and live on the rest..

Because she knows about my debt problems before which is why they got turned into my original loan and then when my loan was extended...

Not about the state I am in once again. I have always been useless with money.. have always been in debt and haven't learn't any lessons through all this at all until now and my lightbulb moment yesterday!...

We have been together eight years... now living together and i so want to propose but she deserves the best and it done right...

I am not proud of my record with money at all and after 17 years its time for me to sort it out once and for all...
thing is , i don't want to lose her... and this could really do it ....

if she can see i am trying to right the wrongs of my ways.. and my history with money then ... well its better...

  • Well done AJL - whatever you decide to now at least it will be a considered decision and not just quick consolidation to resolve a problem now only to have a bigger problem sometime in the future.

I think if you could post a full SOA, which includes joint commitments, it would help a lot. People on here could possibly help make savings for both of you.

This is the thing, when I do eventually explain the situation (after I have had a couple of months to work on it) she will state that its my mess etc. So I would much rather post an SOA in relation to my own money... :(

Even so, she'd be mad if she didn't accept suggestions that cut her outgoings too! Why would she mind if you, for instance, found out you can get your electricity cheaper, or insurances? She'd be saving money too, with no effort - it's win/win!
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

    Hi AJLondon

You might find that your OH already has an inkling of what's going on - it's the other way round for me - I'm trying to get my OH to admit to his debts which I've already posted about and got some suggestions. If you've been together a while and she knows what your spending habits are like and you are now doing something about it it might not be as hard as you think. Having said that I was oblivious to my OH's finances until I'd been living with him for a couple of years and realised that there was no way he could be living within his means with all his outgoings and family.

And from a female point of view with regards to an engagement ring I would much rather get debts out of the way instead of splashing out on a ring.

I hope it all goes ok.
