• It's generally accepted in "techie" circles that the iPhone is currently lagging some way behind the latest generations of smart phones in many areas. In particular the Google Nexus 1, Moto Droid and upcoming HTC Bravo, HTC Passion (a rebadged Google Nexus 1 with different firmware?) and the Windows mobile based HTC HD2. Of course the fact that very few of these phones are actually available on UK networks at this point is a limiter.

You can get a SIM free Google Nexus direct but you're paying full cost for the handset up front rather than paying a higher price over the contract period. And I think the HTC HD2 is available in the UK.

Then again, the iPhone 4G is due sometime this year (first half) so it may leap ahead of the competition for a while.

General note about iPhones (as I'm sure has been done to death elsewhere) Apple just don't discount - they rely on their cool factor and claims of superior products and quality to maintain their prices into the "premium brand" range.

To be fair though, some of their products are very good quality - whether the brand is worth the extra money is for personal preference.

It looks like the HTC Passion and the Bravo are one and the same phone, and is almost the same as the Nexus One in that it uses the same firmware etc, although it is cosmetically slightly different. There is also a Legend due out soon which seems to be an updated version of the Hero.

It's always difficult to judge on pre-release information but for sure, the Passion and Bravo look very similar on specifications - I'm thinking of the USA names though so I should have said HTC Passion as in the renamed HTC Dragon (the OEM Nexus 1 basically)

Irrespective of what HTC codename each variant of their handsets you'd have to assume that they've built a general platform including a 1Ghz snapdragon CPU runing Android 2.1 or better with OLED screens and as you say they are practically the same phone. It'll be interesting to see how models are differentiated.

I believe the spec for the new iPhone (G4) will be revealed next weds (along with the iSlate, or whatever Apple decided to call it).

Speculation seems to suggest it'll have a new case design, up to 128 gig of memory! A touch control case ? a uprated op system (v4). Some models may have hard drives and at least a 5 meg camera.

Or that could all be Apple bs of course they do so love to mess with people...

Yep., rumours abound. ;-) It will be interesting to see how the 4G is positioned and how many variants there will be with what specs and how this will affect the pricing along with how quickly the 3G will phase out.

Whatever happens this year is set to be quite interesting in mobile devices - one of the main reasons why I am reticent to tie myself to any lengthy network contract at the moment.

Hmm thanks for this thread, I'm still undecided. Have never gone over on a contract but this one was up last month and I don't know what to do!

am assuming you mean the 3GS, as the 4th Gen hasnt been released yet, or pics shown.....

plus its not technically 4G, its a 4th Gen model, but 4G tech is some way here in the UK, though I believe O2 are currently testing it, 40mb internet speeds via a mobile phone network...that'll wipe out the Homephone industry
