    Hi,

thanks for all the replies. Got one of the interviews Friday (29), able to go into work an hour late, boss of that day, a colleague has arranged to cover my job during that time.
Telling my boss tomorrow that I want to leave, and will need time for interviews. Sick of the place, sick of my boss. Just hate asking for time off, my boss always moans.

I would leave this out you know, even though you despise your boss telling your boss you need time of for interviews will rile him.

The boss is very unlikely going to let you just have time off unpaid if he knows your leaving (unless he thinks your rubbish then he'll probably drive you to the interview:p)
    Always ask ACAS

My boss has been funny in the past when i have had interviews.
It's not really a good idea to tell your boss that you're looking for another job, unless you're being made redundant.

Just say you need to go to the doctors or dentist or something! Say you have pain when passing urine that needs diagnosis, they wont ask again :D I wouldn't say you are looking for another job, like someone else said, it will only get your boss' back up.

I agree.. I'd go straight to the off sick option. If your new employer says "why were you off sick" then tell the truth - to come for an interview with you!

 This is really dubious advice! If an interviewee said this to me, I would immediately decide that they would be unreliable as an employee, and reject their application.

If, on the otherhand (and this has actually happened), I contacted a candidate to arrange an interview and they said "Is it possible to arrange the interview for early morning / late evening / my lunch hour / the weekend, because I really don't want to let my current employer down even though I am considering leaving" that candidate would get big fat brownie points for loyalty and would instantly get pushed up the list of people I wanted to come to work for me.

I would also advise against telling your current employer that you're looking for a new job. I can't see any benefit to it, and can see lots of disadvantages. You really don't know how long it will take you to find a new job, and in the meantime do you really want to be working for someone who knows they no longer have your loyalty? From what you say they didn't seem to show you a huge amount of respect to begin with, things would only get worse if they think you are about to leave.

Doctors appointment or dentist appointment say your going to. As we all know getting these appointments most of the time aren't flexible and you have to take what you can, so I would use this excuse.

I recently got offered an interview for a job and when I actually asked if it could during my time off or late evening they just said no and that it was this time or nothing! Needless to say when I had arranged to leave early to make the interview (which took a couple of days and hacked off my manager totally) and rang to say I could make it they told me they werent interviewing anymore!! Arghhhh was so angry....!!

I'd say that they sound like a particularly short-sighted and inflexible employer, and you've probably had a narrow escape.

But that may or may not make you feel better! ;)
