Weakening Orange signal

For the last 6 months we have found that the Orange signal in and around our home has weakened so much so we can longer make calls whilst in the house. I have spoken to Orange who say that there is no known problem with the mast and say they have sent someone out to the mast to check its working ok.

The postcode checker says we should receive an excellent signal for voice and texts. We are quite rural so there have been no new builds to block the signal and can in fact clearly see the mast on a nearby hill.

We have asked if we can terminate our contract early and have been told that we could but would have to pay the normal cancellation costs. Of course we cant afford to do this and take out another contract with another provider.

Do we just sit it out until the end of the contract in May 2010?

As there is still signal outside of the house, i am not sure especially as they have sent out an engineer.

Have a word with consumer direct.

Any new buildings between you and the mast ?

My mate had full signal until they built a block of flats between him and the mast, now he's lucky if if gets 2 bars.
  • Generally I'd say you wouldn't have grounds to cancel free of charge, you could consider asking Orange to reduce the talk plan and then see out the contract.

Orange provide you with a network service over much of the UK, mobile phone contracts generally make reference to faulty masts and state that you should not expect a service everywhere, including inside buildings or a service that is fault free.

A localised fault would generally not render a contract for the provision of a service over the whole country null and void.

Just a thought. Have you checked with more than one Orange mobile phone / sim?

    Thank you all.

Jon 01 - no new builds, as I said in my OP we are pretty rural and there hasnt been any builds.

Human Writes - I didnt realise the agreement with Orange was so "loose". We had a good signal when we took the contract out so its disappointing to note that a service can to a point be lost yet there is no duty of care from the provider - only in the mobile service industry hey!

Thanks Guys Dad - yes this is a fault covering myself and my neighbours who have complained as well and we have a range of different phones.

We have 3 phones on Orange in the house. More often than not, none of us have any signal at all, sometimes for whole days at a time. Text messages can take 3 hours to arrive too.

If you are still getting signal outside the house i do not think you can cancel, because service is not guaranteed inside, but if you stated you were to use the phone at home and it has been working okay until now, there might be grounds to cancel on the premise the service is no longer being provided, although if there is signal outside the house there is still a service there so you cant cancel.
