Kind of related to the topic...I sent the small person in with an extra bottle of squash today which I had frozen overnight. He said his teacher had said that such cold drinks are not a good idea because they cool the body down too much and that you sweat more. Apparently you should drink tea instead [although obviously not when you're 8!] That's a new one one me. Does anyone know if it's true?

Ah pub science. If I had a pound for all of the rubbish pub science I had heard.

Stick to cold drinks in the heat and thank me later!

  • Ah ha, got the answer, good old google!! In theory (note I say theory!) drinking a cold drink causes your body temperature to go up to digest it. I have cold drinks anyway though! :p

To be clear have a look at the end of
    http://cancerresourcecenter.com/articles/article20.html

    some short quotes
'Actually, drinking really cold liquid when you are feeling hot may lead to a slight constriction of the blood vessels in the skin and actually (for a few minutes) decrease heat loss'

'What is most important when you are exercising or very hot is not the temperature of the liquid, but the amount of fluid consumed.'

'drinking hot liquids does not actually raise body temperature by a measurable amount and drinking cold liquids does not actually lower body temperature by a measurable amount.'

'If it makes you feel good to drink something hot when you're cold or something cold when you're hot, by all means do so.'

Sure, you have to bust these myths though.

Remember the reason you need to drink is to replenish fluids and even hot, mild diuretics like tea will achieve this. I find cool tap water does the trick for me.

I always find having a cool strip down wash before going to bed makes me cooler and fresher. Used to do this with DD when she was little and even now she has a cool bath or shower daily before going to bed normally.

Just a word of warning that you shouldn't leave a fan on in a childs bedroom over night - when the temp drops during the night, the fan can actually chill the room down too much.. I think there was a case last year of a child actually dying from hypothermia because of this.....

I keep all the curtains closed in the bedrooms in this weather - keeps the sun out which helps a bit - as the sun moves round the house, I open the curtains and windows after it to let the cooler air in.
