Trying to cancel Sky - help!

My Sky account is in my ex's name even though I pay the bill. I'm moving house and don't want Sky anymore but Sky have told me as I'm not the account holder I can't cancel!!! I was told by other forums to cancel the direct debit but Sky said I can't cancel direct debit because if I do they'll chase me for any debt despite me not being the account holder and can't change it! I'm no longer in contact with my ex and no way of finding out where he is.
Help! I've been told to write another letter to Head Office.
What would you do?
Grrrr!

If your name isn't on the Sky contract, they cannot chase you for the debt, as you aren't the customer.
Just cancel the Direct Debit.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
When I rang Sky and told her this, her words were, because my bank details were given when the account was set up in 2007, they can chase me for any debt run up and take it from my account.
I don't want to get a black mark against my name. Do you think this is likely?0 -

So on the one hand they say that you can't operate the account because its not in your name and then on the other that because the money comes out of your account then you are liable. Gibberish.
If the account is not in your name then you have no legal liability for the debt. They cannot put a note on your credit record as you have no legal contract with them. Your ex-partner is liable - if you cancel your direct debit then they cannot take any money from your account. If they try then the bank has to immediately replace it. They can only chase your ex-partner for any debt. Have you tried getting your ex-partner to cancel the account?0 -
If its not in your name just ignore them. Happy daysLoving this site.:beer:0

Write explaining the whole situation by email to Sky's Chief Executive Jeremy Darroch at jeremy.darroch@bskyb.com with cc to the Finance Director - andrew.griffiths@bskyb.com and CRSupport@bskyb.com
This gets the issue referred to high level complaints and then gets properly sorted out in a short period of time. Dealing with Sky by phone about complex issues always leaves customers being given the runaround:mad:
If you are paying the bill then its obvious that the contract is in reality with you and this is the point you should stress in your email. If you and your ex have been a customer for more than 12 months you are not under any long term contractual liability to keep subscribing and can cancel straight away on one month's notice.
Sky's ordinary front line staff are actively trained to make up any dishonest excuse they can to try and stop customers from unsubscribing precisely because they have so many unhappy customers who want to leave them.:eek:0 -
Why not get a male friend to ring them with the account details (give the male friend your ex's date of birth etc) and get them to cancel it for you if youre worried about them chasing you ... even though they have no legal rights to go after you.0

Why should OP go to this trouble? The OP has no contract with Sky. Consequently Sky can only pursue ex-partner for any debt.0
